They know what their payroll is. Don't ever cut the person collecting the dollars any slack on this front. Their job is to know what their business costs them, and what they choose to pay people represents 80% of that. The average employee, after benefits, cost employers 2x as much as their actual wages.

I deliberately avoided talking to my boss for a few days, the anxiety was just too much. I finally tore the bandaid off, and just asked for $21/hr over text, even though I still felt I'm undervaluing myself in the grand scheme of things. He got back to me pretty fast saying it was beyond the budget and that he was finalizing my removal. I guess they think nothing of letting go of employees that they've spent several years investing into. Whatever I guess, now I don't have to live with the dreadful anxiety of speaking with him anymore.

Wait, you're getting fired because you asked for a raise?  Isn't that illegal?  Or had you put in a notice contingent on getting a raise?

I was getting a pay cut, so I found a new job that hired me, and I told them so and asked for a better offer than that to stay with them, they declined and let me go officially. That's the gist of everything that happened.

Ahhh ok.  Yeah I mean if they aren't even going to counter-offer... good riddance.  And hope the new gig is much nicer for you!

Probably not a great sign for the quality of the tax prep company if they’re willing to lowball then let go someone with experience shortly before tax season.

It's possible they're playing chicken with me, if they think I'm lying about the other position. But yeah I don't trust their business judgment, my manager there was an "MBA Bro" at best.

Man that sucks. I'm hoping that your new place winds up being better.
Your old boss sounds like a jerk, because I can literally find fast food paying $15 (depends on location).

Just try to keep friendly with your old boss, because you may have to use him as a reference like it or not.
Somebody once gave me that good advice. Even if he deserves it, you're moving on to better.

World is off balance with costs. I dunno what the answer is. Glad you're getting a better situation at least.

So you got severeance. Wow! Clearly this is a responsible company that knows how to conduct business effectively. I'm sure they'll still be around in a few years.

Got fucked over by my insurance. They're refusing to cover a medication infusion that I'm supposed to get in a week because it's "not medically necessary".

Start the appeals process, demand to know what doctor refused it and why.  If your doctor ordered it, it's necessary.

I know there are resources to help with appealing these decisions too, I can't seem to find mine.

And if you fail to get it appealed, you can tell the doctor you don't have insurance and will pay in cash, and often they'll charge less for it.

I'm tried of these memes/blogs/etc that are telling me "You don't have to put two spaces after a period any more." It's not a burden for me to do that, thankyouverymuch, because I happen to have been "unlucky" enough to be born in the era where that's how we were taught - and therefore engrained now in non-plastic neural pathways.

I will totally not have my life improved by saving a keystroke. My life is, in fact, made worse by you telling me I need to change it and that somehow I will be "liberated" by not having to force myself to remember to not double-tap the spacebar after every period.

Where are you seeing so many memes and articles about this obscure thing any why are they hurting you so much? I'd advise that you avoid thinking about it too much, I don't think anyone will notice how many spaces you put between sentences.

... I actually do notice that kind of thing, occasionally (though it's kinda' odd to be noting that kind of thing in a post that... isn't using double space between sentences... or at least isn't displaying as it on my end)? With it having largely (thankfully) fallen off it can stand out as either mildly bad editing (largely harmless but not great) or an intentional presentation quirk (that's fine, though).

Would agree with the just ignore it bit, but, uh. I was trained with double space, too, and let me tell you it did not take long to work that nuisance out of muscle memory once folks started cottoning on to how unneeded it is, ha. Did take, like... a few months and folks harping on knocking it off, but it happened.

You can still unengrain it if you feel like! I believe in you and the very mild reduction in risk of carpal and slightly less keyboard wear that comes with it.

and if you don't feel like it that's okay but if you ever publish something expect the editor or somethin' to fix it in post 'cause folks don't format like that no more and cutting it saves page space without effecting readability

My boss wanted me to help him destroy expired food because corporate ordered it cut open and trashed. To keep homeless people from seeking it. Obviously I refused, because I'm not going to help endanger anyone desperate enough to eat expired food out of the dumpster; if they can't get it from charity they're going to try to eat it anyway. It should be illegal to intentionally poison or expose food as far as I'm concerned.
