Water is something you’ll actively encounter every day and has application at all states, for the most part. You can keep food fresh with it at 0, and you can cook with it at 100 (or thereabouts anyway).

That's true... but Fahrenheit has way more application to surviving. Just the tens place alone of a typical Fahrenheit temperature I will experience - and conveniently, I will almost always experience temperatures in the one to two digits - tells me everything I need to know.

If someone can feel the difference between 21 and 23°C I'd consider that peculiar, your comfort level is going to depend on relative humidity anyway. If you can't dress for a 10°C  difference (5 up 5 down) that sounds pretty dependant to me, are you some rare flower? The thermometer indicating 0°C in the car tho, now that seems like an adequate expression of danger that is more essential on a moment to moment basis.

It's the phase changes that make 0° and 100° special. Between those 100 degrees is the entirety of the liquid state of water (assuming standard atmospheric pressure).

So....I've got to give someone some bad news.

I've been on Hinge for a few months now. Another potential relationship that didn't work out is what drove me to there in the first place. I got motivated to find a relationship and decided to go the "talk to everyone" route. So I connected with someone about 45 minutes away. We've been talking intensely for about a month now.

I went up to see her where she lives, some pretty small and unpleasant town north of me.

We chatted at a bar, hung out and eventually had sex.

From the outset I've had some reservations. We've had great conversations, she's a good person and the sex was fun.

And yet, there's a lot of things preventing me from wanting to date her exclusively. She's fairly overweight and that isn't my type, shallow though that may be. She has a lot of of health problems, from melanoma to Type I Diabetes to Ulcerative Colitis. She's a divorced mother of two teenagers. Financially speaking, she's at the margins. She's a small town woman that has given the last 17 years of her life to her kids, hasn't really ever left the state and hasn't had a lot of the life experiences I've had. She's got a lot of family drama. She works erratic hours at multiple jobs as a nurse practioner / caregiver. She doesn't take great care of herself. Her house is pretty cluttered and smelled like pee the first time I walked into it. And while we've had great and sometimes exhaustive conversations, I get the impression we're not in the same place in terms of intellect or culture. We don't share a lot of interests. She doesn't understand common internet acronyms which, weirdly, I find kind of irritating. And she has a tendency to forget what she's told me about and kind of repeats herself. When that's about stuff like her ex-husband or her family drama that starts to wear a little thin after hours and hours on the phone. All this has been going through my mind the last few weeks.

I haven't dated anyone for a seriously long time. She's the first date I've been on in no lie, over a decade. And when I liked her on Hinge, I knew I was dropping my standards somewhat. Her energy was great but I knew I was engaging with someone I wasn't 100% on. I rationalized it that I would give it time and see what they were really like.

Well, that time has come. She clearly wants to be exclusive. But in truth I can't really see myself dating her. And now I'm in the position of having to break it off with someone for the first time in my life. I've always been the one getting broken up with, not the other way around.

I regret having sex with her. Not because it wasn't good or anything but because it fulfilled the typical expectation of men that they have sex and then vanish. The truth is, I had reservations before I even had sex with her. But we'd spent so much time talking and getting ourselves worked up that it was somewhat unavoidable. For that I take responsibility. She isn't some 20 or 30 year old who is doing flings and moving on. She's at the point in her life where she wants a real, stable relationship and I have to break it to her that it's not me.

I don't want to hurt her feelings. She's been through enough shit in her life already and I hate knowing that she's going to be left feeling used and abandoned. But I also can't fake how I feel. That's equally just as bad: acting like you really want to be with someone even when you don't. I've never wanted to settle and agreeing to date her exclusively would feel like settling. I was careful to not commit to anything but she's becoming insistent on knowing where we are and so I have to have the talk with her. I'd happily continue to be her friend, because once I connect with someone I don't just ghost them. But I know that will mean fuck all to her in the moment. I've been there too after all. She wants a real relationship and I can't get myself into one with her. It sucks but it's what needs to happen. Dragging out giving her an answer isn't going to do either of us any favors.

Ppppfffttttttttt. Dating is tough. Connecting with people is tough. Making a decision on relationships is tough. Going forward, I'm going to be very careful about not making things sexual because it just confuses the issue and makes it that much tougher to say how you really feel. The more I think about it the worse I feel. I hope she can hear my honesty and not be devastated but.....chances are that's not going to happen. But I made the bed so I have to sleep in it. That's what she's owed as a person.

The true irony is that the relationship that lit a fire under my ass was pretty one-sided: I was putting more into it than they were. Now the shoe is on the other foot and I feel bad because I know *exactly* what it feels like to want to be with someone who can't/won't be with you. I've ended up doing the thing to them I didn't want done to me.
