I want a fast and hard to board brig. Coppering doesn't help this.

Coppering does make it faster.

Yeah, coppering makes the bottom of the hull smoother and more uniform allowing for the ship to cut through the water easier.

Can you refit it to use the new cannons while you are at it?

Yeah, that's a given. Anyone can think of something to do beside coppering and changing the guns?

Adding firing positions for Coombes?

Also, I do think that we need switch two mobile 6 pounders to one nose 8 pounder to make the ship lighter

We could improve our seasoning methods, maybe, or fit them with a bermuda rig. It's more appropriate for a smaller coastal vessel and should give them more maneuverability than their square-rigged loyalist counterparts in the waters around our island. That's a fairly complicated revision though, and if we want this to also be our trading vessel we'd probably be better off leaving it how it is.

I prefer to keep it simple and relatively cheap:

Revise Dover class brig into Montgomery class brig
Improve sails to make faster. Remove 6 pounders. Add one forward facing 8 pounder. Add firing positions for Coombe mini-cannons. Add marine infantry quarters. Add few dories.

I want a trading\axualary ship that is cheap, swift enough to run away, hard to board and capable to board itself. Roles are: trading, rading unescorted traders, doing small scale landings.

Should we try to build a line of defences?
If we fortify from Montgomery to Fort Combe that would give use a safe fall back line of that front.

That's not a bad plan, and if we build it along the river it would have extra defenses.

Wait, UR, you want to guts the whole broadside of our brig?

Edit: Never mind, it has no broadside. I still think we should keep two 8-pdrs.

I'm okay with it if we copper it.

Revise Dover-class brig into Yorktown-class brig

Replace the two 6-pdr by two 8-pdr Van Karsten, with some cast iron brazier positioned next to them for carcass shots. Copper the hull to make it fast, add pintle-mounted Coombe mini-cannons on the sides, increase the masts and sails size. The resulting ship should have slightly more firepower than the Dover while being much faster.
