Sounds like you guys would like either a hermit dwarf mode game (DFHack lets players choose how many dwarves arrive) or advfort (a DFHack thingie for adv mode). It's not perfect, but you can get something similar to what you want right now.

Huh, perhaps building a little tower for my necromancer buddies might sound cool, But whatever, they might already be murdered by then.

I play adventurer mode the most, and I am loving what hes doing with it, have you played a bard n the new version yet? Its awesome.

I can't wait to be able to cut down trees (in adventurer mode) build a cabin, and then start a family, and successively play it kind of like a sims legacy game. And grow in power... become  a rich merchant family eventually make a bid for an entire civilization. It will be so awesome.

I can't tell you how excited I am at the prospect of doing that now that you mention it.  It's like Mount and Blade meets EU4.

Is that 64 bit version of Dwarf Fortress likely to have multicore too?

No. 64 bit is 64 bit. Multi-core is multi-core. And Toady hasn't mentioned any newly built multi-core DF prototypes yet.

Which doesn't mean one doesn't exist of course, but it's not part of any 'coming-soon' announcements.

I don't think Toady will add that much stuff without some optimization.
There is one very clear trend: Toady prefers more features over optimisations and bugfixing. In my opinion this is serious error, but I can hardly fault Toady for it, since these priorities are exactly what majority of players want.

And remember, it's going to be 64 bit. (queue the angry posts telling me 64 bit won't help worldgen)
64-bit wont make anything significantly faster. This is misconception. It will help stuffing more things like large worlds or large embarks without crashing, but fps will be still abysmal.

I think that he MIGHT multithread DF at some point, hopefully.
While possible, it is doubtful. As someone else noted, rewriting single-thread program to multithread one is massive pain in ass. In fact, I will bet that this DF (meaning "Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress") never will have multithreading. Wait for Chapter III, if it will be ever done. Creating game from scrath with multithreading in mind is significantly easier than rewriting anything in old game that I imagine must be utter clusterfuck of old and new code interwined in complicated ways by now.

In 5 years memristors might have replaced transistors/hard memory in computers, which hypothetically could make a single core operate many times faster while using less power. If this is the case, DF might actually run faster then than it does now regardless of additional features.
So far anyone betting on faster single CPUs lost. Near to mid-future lies in more and more cores, and use of them (meaning single program using more than one core) requires multi-threading. What will be after that is anybody's guess.

How will it go? Will it be burned? Will it have actual graphics? (without mods)

I doubt it will have graphics. Also unless Toady hires someone doing that job, I guess drawing everything himself will keep him busy way too long. But I really hope the tileset switches to Unicode or whatever to allow more than those 256 tiles, we currently have. Many of them are already used two or three times or even more often, number increasing as features increase. Toady was talking about hitting a wall with 256 tiles already a few years ago. So maybe, maybe there is a little hope he gets annoyed by it himself and there's a little expansion within the next five years.

I do also hope for bug fixing and an overhaul of certain menus like stockpiles currently lacking entries for all type of items, additional search functions and some useful tools providing better control and - VERY important - overview of workflows, job assignment and stuff like that. Personally I find bigger forts completely unmanageable without Dwarf Therapist. Adding the Automine Gem/Ore function and the possibilty to assign specific priorities to certain tasks like mining with one of the 40.X versions was a great start. So I hope to see more of that kind.

I really like the concept of the locations - temples, taverns and libraries. Set up a location and add buildings, items, workers, etc. as you wish. If I remember correctly, somewhen was mentioned this system shall be expanded. I think that will be really cool and greatly fit for other locations like kitchen, bathing areas, whatever or even certain industrial areas as well. It feels currently like a complete mess to set those up, but hopefully things become more neat and tidy later on. Mess is the characteristic charm of Dwarf Fortress, but too much mess isn't good either.

And finally, if I could make a wish for a new feature, that might be plumbing - with real pipes instead of carving everything out, pressure regulators and fancy stuff like that. We have pipes already as parts of Screw Pumps, so this appears to be just a small step further ahead.

It's what needs to happen if the game stands any chance of being 'finished'. He can't hope to optimize stuff like pathfinding until multi-tile creatures are in. The time spent would ultimately be wasted.

In my opinion, this game is in perma-alpha state. It will never be actually finished. Nothing wrong with that, but it means certain consequences, like fact that perma-alpha game must be playable even in apha state.

Disagree. Certain bugfixes and optimisations are worth it, if affected features wont change for many years (that is usually case with any single feature in DF). Also many optimisations and fixes will be useful even after changes.

It's slowly inching its way to version 1. We're 42% of the way towards what Toady considers the end of alpha. (It's how he decides the major version number each release.)

And he does those. We're in the bug fixing phase right now, as follows every major release. Low hanging fruit and critical fixes.

Do enough to keep the game playable, but don't push the next feature release years behind schedule with nothing to keep players interested.

In 5 years DF will be greatly expanded and it will be a very detailed simulation of a fantasy world where you can be just anybody - a soldier, a slave, a merchant, a king. I really hope that the game will give the player a real ability to plan his setup in adv mode just like what Toady wants to do with the Fort mode - to set his background, initial possessions, family and relations etc. So that if I want to I can be a respected merchant from a powerful guild or a runaway slave with nothing but my clothes on.

There are many examples how it can be done - URW already has different scenarios that affect the setting, initial items and the world around you. You can choose to be a fisherman, a runaway slave or a boy whose father was just killed by a bear, which is still around, waiting to kill you! Ultima Ratio Regum is toying with different political, economical and social systems, bringing a huge variety to the world in so many perspectives.

So far the fort mode was my favourite but I believe that in the future adv mode we will be able to run forts and states from the perspective of their kings and this will be great fun. Imagine playing as a king, commanding your armies, making new laws that change your land, condemning people to death, surviving assassination attempts... just wonderful!

Spoiler: My wish. (click to show/hide)

Family names with a patrilineal/matrilineal toggle would be amazing, as well. I've done this in the past by using nicknames to change the surnames, but it can be tedious with big migration waves.

Bugfixes for Dwarf Fortress 2020 edition -
  • Fixed issue where loyalty cascade and general brawling would ensue from arguments over seasoning on roasts.
  • Removed crash caused during bronze collosi attacks when their fists broke through more than 10 workshops at once.
  • Temporarily removed procedural invention generation due to issue where the game would eventually recreate itself and cease all function to play itself
  • Fixed crash caused by dwarven philosophers gaining sentience through emergent AI
