Walk up the road (the opposite direction of the speeding caravan).

You begin walking up the road, away from the caravan of vehicles that has just passed. You are moving perpendicular to the direction of the smoke pillar.

You walk for several blocks noticing that most of the parking lots to the small office buildings are relatively empty and there are no people walking around.

In the distance (in the direction towards the smoke pillar, but much closer) you hear two people yelling at eachother. Their words are too distorted by the distance (you can hear voices but not make out the words), but it seems to be an argument. You listen to the exchange for a minute or two and then a gun shot rings out.

The speaking stops and you can hear someone crying.

What do you do?

Sneaking up into the buildings off to the side of the road you notice there is a small apartment complex behind a few of the office buildings. Being as stealthy as possible you moving between the buildings towards the apartment building (where you think the noise most likely is coming from).

Making your way through an alley a fence lays in your path, deciding that you can climb it quietly you begin climbing up making as little noise as possible. The shaking of the metal is noticeable but not very loud, making your way over the top you decide dropping to the ground would be quieter than climbing the rest of the way down.

Landing firmly on your feet with a slight thud your guess was correct.

Exiting the alleyway you see the from of the apartment, stairs on the side lead up to each floor´s walk way and a small underpass leads to an area enclosed by the apartment building.

What do you do? (The noises coming from this area have stopped)

Quietly you sneak up the stairs, they lead to a balcony walkway wrapped around the second and third floors of the apartment. You decide to take the second floor, walking around you notice many of the apartment doors and windows are opened or broken into. The rooms filled with clothes thrown about or dressers fallen over with drawers pulled out and laying on the floor.

You think these people must have left in a rush...

Walking around more you find a gap between two apartment rooms, it leads to another balcony on the inside side of the building, looking around the corner it seems there is a small courtyard enclosed but you can't see many of the details from this angle.

What do you do?

Let's assume that whoever shot that gun, is in the courtyard. If so, we should get out of here, before they come looking for us.

Pardon the long post, i was kinda rambling

Furthermore, after that we should assume anyone we meet also has a gun. Lets not walk down the center of the road. Stick to the sidewalks. Move quickly across parts that lack doorways or parked cars or similar emergancy cover. Also, i suggest we do not go to the military base. Looking at the situation, its safe to assume something really, really, zombie-apocalyptic type thing is going on. Everyones going to be at the military station. And no doubt they are panicking, crying, arguing, and doing all those things people in apocalyptic scenarios tend to do. We should think of a place too go that would be useful in terms of supplies, but where other people probably wouldnt initially think of going. Cyxrix, could we have an idea of what sort of  buildings of note are around here? This is our hometown, after all.

Edit: Ya know, John does have a gaming laptop. Maybe he would actually understand basic apocalypse logic. After all, when the zombies come Nerds are apparently the only ones who will udnerstand teh concept of a headshot.
