Time Stops - Retreading the Office Complex [SG]
« on: December 09, 2015, 09:32:09 am »

You were pretty much ordinary. You've led an uneventful life, up to your graduation from college; had unremarkable friends, worked uneventfully and continued on living as such... ordinarily... Until the day you were blindsided - or should we say almost?

You are standing, agape, right in front of what would be a speeding truck in the middle of the road. The truck is halted just right in front of you, akin to those weird stereoscopic View-Masters you enjoyed as a child. You're not even sure if you're alive - but you are sure that the world looks painted on, what with smoke particles floating in midair against all human comprehension. Normally, you'd begin to question the source of your powers, but seeing that standing in the middle of a speeding truck's route, that doesn't exactly make for a good moment of reflection. You fear that time would resume while you're in harm's way.

----------

All of that doesn't matter right now. Would you like to test the extent of your powers?

We are John Smith. And we are being hunted.

But let's get out of the way of that truck.

Ahh, yes. Hunted. You're not exactly sure why some terrorists barged in your simple office as you were prepping paperwork for sales clients. Time seemingly stopped for you when the front door of the office flew open, with three heavily-clad soldier-types popping out of the doorway one by one, each aiming their heavy assault rifles around and shouting in English, looking for a John Smith.

There was no other person named John Smith in the office, except you. Fight, or flee? Either way, the fire exit was near your cubicle, so you made a mad dash for it, ignoring all sounds of gunshots behind you. Fortune was behind your back; you never got hit at all.

And that brings you to now, just below your office, in the middle of the road. At risk of being T-Boned you ran far from the office anyway since the alternative was death by gunshots, and you were not exactly sure why people were stalking you. In hindsight, the reason is all too clear now, you think.

---

That is enough thinking for the day, however. You move away from the truck before time cracks, leaks and resumes. Time is your advantage, at the moment. You can try risking going farther from the office with reckless disregard to whether time would resume again, or find some distance between the office, hide a bit in the alleyway, and wait for time to resume so you can pop out safely, and so that no one would notice any anomalous persons.

Let's head to the alleyway.
+1 Along the way we should do some basic things like pick up a rock and toss it, and tap someone on the shoulder, to see what's up with this time stuff.

+1 Along the way we should do some basic things like pick up a rock and toss it, and tap someone on the shoulder, to see what's up with this time stuff.

You're curious. Most importantly, you're curious to when exactly time would resume. You're still partially out of your wits, having been almost killed by suspicious terrorists and a speeding truck.

But you take two deep breaths, pace yourself, and immediately try to find an alleyway in which you can hide, and wouldn't be too obvious as to where they might possibly find you.

You find yourself at Mannel's Video Rentals, a rather-antiquated video rental store (They even have Betamax Tapes!) three blocks north from your office, past an intersection, two blocks east and five blocks further north. However, you didn't exactly go here for the sake of visiting the old video collection. No, you came here to find an alleyway you can hide inside. Here's where most homeless people don't go into for some reason. There's no one here; so perhaps you may be able to put it to your advantage.

Near the alley entrance, you spot a broken-off piece of brick. You pick it up and throw it, and see that most of its momentum gradually slows down as it becomes stuck in time. You experiment the same with a steam pipe, and see that the object is barely making a vibration until it solidifies in spacetime again.

There's no one in the alleys, but you need to confirm the extent of your powers. You spot pieces of concrete, various hunks of junk and a cat. You throw each into the air - making sure the cat doesn't fly as high as the rest of your items thrown.

Then you sit down and wait for time to pass.

------------------------------

What seemed like an eternity to you has finally come to pass, as time slowly resumes and everything you threw flew straight away into their plotted trajectories, and the cat hissing in surprise as it tries to regain landing. Time seems to slowly solidify moving objects, interacted when time is stopped and a person unbound to its whims removes conscious grasp of objects.

You hear a distant gunshot. You're in hiding behind Mannel's alleyway. There are dumpsters in the area, and a pathway to the sewers. You can risk hiding there if people try to find you here.

What do you do?

USELESS! USELESS! USELESSSSSSSSSS!

Clearly we need to- well, first let's buy some candy from the shop(they have snacks, right?), then head to the sewers.

Actually, we have some control over time, right? lets try to slow or stop it for a bit, then make a run in the OPPOSITE direction of out home. Stick to cover, and watch out that we don't run into frozen people. they might explode if we do it while time is stopped!

You're quite sure that, with your strength and current physique, any people you ram into won't actually explode. They'll just feel pain. Really bad.

You spend time trying to stop time. The irony of letting time pass to keep time from passing makes you chuckle at your attempt. (TC = 10, Roll = 56) You try to recall the feeling of time slowing down as you faced down the speeding truck. To no avail, you can't seem to stop - or slow time. You, however, learn to control your emotions and breathing a bit, and think you are more attuned to your power (TC + 6).

If you want to walk towards home, you'll have to do it while time itself is flowing.

Clearly we need to- well, first let's buy some candy from the shop(they have snacks, right?), then head to the sewers.

Mannel's sells a bunch of irrelevant goodies and snacks. You discover they only have Chupa-chups. Aww hell, you don't quite like this one, but it's serviceable. You purchase two sticks anyway.

The sewers are actually pretty damned crammed; you'd have to hunker down to keep moving around in the sewers. Add to the fact that there's basically no light whatsoever down within, and it's pretty much suicide to go exploring deep under while absolutely having no flashlight. And no, your smartphone isn't exactly a viable replacement - it only has 20% of its battery life remaining. Remember the girl who was dead drunk, and died lost in the Odessa Catacombs? It's only good as a hiding place when you absolutely have no choice.

You hear the blaring of police sirens. They seem to be headed towards the office complex you escaped from.

Given your musings, would you still proceed down to the sewers? Or would you walk around in plain sight, and perhaps meet your foes? Or would you like to do something else?

Well then. Perhaps we can look into potential futures to see what happens if we enter the sewers?

We have been able to slow time slightly. We can't see into the future as far as I am aware. Lets NOT go into the sewer, but locate the cops instead.

Well then. Perhaps we can look into potential futures to see what happens if we enter the sewers?

As far as you know, you were only able to merely (if you can even call it that) stop time. It has only happened once; you're not even sure if that was a freak accident from somewhere, but you feel a bit more in tune to the temporal forces surrounding you.

We have been able to slow time slightly. We can't see into the future as far as I am aware. Lets NOT go into the sewer, but locate the cops instead.

You walk down and try to go back to your office. You feel slightly guilty about ditching your friends and colleagues in the office to deal with the terrorist threat. You steel yourself and try to follow the police back to the office complex. Walking a few blocks past, you can see that the chaos that ensued inflated massively. This has put you on edge, and you are rapidly having second thoughts over your decision. But you are also starting to be wracked with survivor's guilt - not that you're sure that everyone's dead, but you feel that everyone is dead where you work.

You were only a normal person; you didn't do anything to deserve any of this. Why is everything rapidly going wrong? You give yourself some time as you pace towards the office complex slowly. You are sure this is a bad idea. Your focus is disrupted when you hear the telltale whirrs of a helicopter propeller spinning just above.

"Alert! All Citizens in the area are to evacuate when possible! Stand down, terrorists! Do not force us to use lethal force!"

Do you go through with it and attempt to locate your co-workers, if they are still alive? Or do you flee to save your skin. You have a very real chance of dying, since the gunshots escalated and other buildings have been set on fire.
