I'd probably just go to DC. We might be able to find the operating manuals for a few of the power plants from the Library of Congress. We might be able to convert a few of them to run on other resources available in the local area. If not, we might be able to keep them running long enough to build something that might run off of burning lumber instead.

Ultimately we're racing against technological regression and survival, but I'm more concerned intellectually over the loss of the technology. I mean, we should try to survive first and foremost, but secondary to that might be maintaining the infrastructure to allow us to live comfortably until our descendants overpopulate and screw over the contained society we built.

Let's look at the wind maps for the US... Well, if the yellowstone supervolcano erupted today, and didn't totally alter the flow of air as it would likely do, it would be blown mostly around the midwest, then up towards Canada. There seems to be some current pushing the air north around Ohio, so the east coast would remain relatively safe in this unlikely, if not impossible scenario.

What we can do is settle in the Arts and Industries building in DC. It is a very spacious and it is a big building. We could also settle in the capital. Most books made would be in the Library of Congress and get documents from there to set up a society. We can also scavenge for solar panels.

We need to be careful with those because they start becoming really inefficient over the course of 20 years.

What we should do is print everything we can while we can, but also focus on maintaining the local power grid so we DON'T crash to hunter-gatherer.

California has a very mild climate and a massive agricultural base; once we got set up, starvation would almost be a non-issue. We've got some of the best tech in the world out here as well as plenty of renewable energy.

Fine, but we're bringing the entire Library of Congress with us if at all possible...

Drought (or whatever you call it) In california, and the fact that a lot of it is somewhat desert? DC is nice, chill, and hell, we've got closeby farming areas in East Coast, what about Pennsylvania?

There are arguments to be made for easy access to Silicon Valley though.

There's nowhere where starvation is an issue for seven years at an absolute minimum. A city runs out of food in a week, certainly. However, when the world dies to the extent listed, we've got a good year or five before we'd even need to go for whatever crops survive into stable cycles and feral cattle. Trying to reestablish industrial society would be a twenty year concern

We should try to maintain what we can though.

There's something around 30 million people in California right now and we're still not out of water. Hell, some places don't even have rationing yet. Even if every Bay12er in the world moved here, drought would not be much of an issue. The deserty bits are mostly in the south; as you go north things get much more pleasant. Plus, no snow unless you live in the mountains!
