You know you've got that "do task now" button on workshops.  Have you upgraded to 42.03?  I think that problem is less of an issue in the newest upgrade.  There were problems with needs not being fulfilled even when they were taking their time off.
Yes, and yes, and neither affect this larger problem in the slightest, in my forts. In 42.03.

Question: how much do scholars work at their ordinary tasks once they've been assigned to a library? I'm thinking about assigning all my animal trainers, engineers and medical dwarfs to my library once I get around to building it.

Once they start pondering! and discussing!, they will not stop for anything. The only exception seems to be 'plant seeds'. The sessions can last for a very long time. If you really need the work done, remove the dwarf from the scholar list. You will need to do this periodically with all your scholars anyways, to allow them time for their leisure and spiritual needs. Having atheist dwarves as scholars helps there.

Some dwarves seem not fit at all for scholaring. One of my dwarves, who 'personally views introspection as a waste of time', has never set foot in the library despite being assigned as scholar.

My scribe rarely copies books.  Do you think this is because of his personality or something else?

I feel like I'm really missing something in my library. Nobody has written anything in years, despite a massive pile of quires. The only time somebody actually wrote something was early on when a visiting human wrote stuff. I'm pretty sure my library is all set up correctly with bookcases, chests and tables/chairs, but nobody ever writes. Is there some tag in the personality stuff that I need to be looking out for? What else do I need?

Do you have any scholars assigned? This is probably a stupid question, but I didn't see it directly stated in the post. Also, you DO need scholars of a certain personality type[Or at least, NOT of a certain personality type]. Make sure that your scholars value[Or at least don't regard as worthless] the accumulation of knowledge and have a need for abstract thinking.

okay so you can cage trap guests ... if they happen to wander into a cagetrap that been webbed up.
so now I'm slowly installing caged guests into my Inn bedrooms as living statues.

Put cage traps in the tavern.  Some of the less alcohol tolerant guests get stunned when they drink.

I do have scholars. It's interesting. In looking at probably 30 dwarves (scholars and non) every single one of them values knowledge. I didn't see any that value its accumulation though. Some of my scholars also apparently have the need for abstract thinking, because at least one more of them was unfettered by doing it. I appointed some more though that valued knowledge and had the need to think abstractly. If one ever writes a book I'll try and see what might be unique about them.

I've also rebuilt and redesignated my library. My scribe copied a book shortly after that was done, so it seems like maybe that did something, but not nothing has happened again for a season or two. I'll keep trying to tweak it.

Doubt it, but repeating upright spikes would do the trick.

Now I want to design a new kind of disco ball: a circle of clear/crystal glass windows in the center of the dance floor, encasing a smaller circle of gem-encrusted spikes/spears in an alternating pattern, attached to a repeater. It wouldn't actually look flashy, but I would know.

So how big is everyone building their taverns, temples and libraries? What sizes seem to work well? I'm getting pretty close to FINALLY carving out the obsidian core of my dream fort, so I can't put off planning the layout much longer. I'm looking at 9 7x10 temples, and I need to fit my tavern and two libraries at the front of my design, so I'm thinking 26x10 for the tavern and 24x10 for the libraries.

Here's the bottom floor/tavern area of my mead hall. The upper story has quarters for the ruler of the town. On either side are quarters for travelers.

This looks small, but only started to get overcrowded recently in the 60-80 population range.

Nice tavern! Mine have all been...well, less than satisfactory, in the end.

And a (probably) stupid question: How do you make a scroll-only stockpile? I found codices under finished goods, but scrolls...they're grouped under "tools" in the stocks menu, but my "tool" stockpile isn't attracting any scrolls. I suppose I can just make myself a series of bookcases and get them that way, but if there's a way to stockpile them, I'd appreciate it.
