I have to ask, though - why the Hat of Pondering? Especially with the Lightning Scales?

I kept it for the MP boost, but I don't know if it was wise. I figured since I move slow anyway, won't hurt to keep it on. I used blink and summons to keep protected, and also i had more than 50 AC most of the time so I could take the occasional hit.

Some people leave the channels for their own games, not sure why.

Other than that, there shouldn't be - I've spent all day watching 4th Arra on Xtahua and chatting, and it's ok.

edit : Oh hey look, a fucking PDA in Elf. If only I wasn't a Statueform Octopode.

Also, some people seem to think you actually need MR for Elf. Two trips to the Abyss later, I'm glad I can say they are absolutely right. Thank god Chei-Statueform is absurd.

Also also, when most people think of Octopodes, I bet they're all "Oh wow, now I can wear all those cool randart rings my characters keep getting at once!"

I can absolutely bet they are NOT all "Oh man, now I can wear all these +2 rings of protection and evasion at once!"

To be fair that death was utter bullshit, because I was practically invulnerable. I had gotten 2 pips of each resist, ~40 armour and 25 EV when statueformed, 220 HP, torment resistance due to statue form. Nothing else could've killed me. And then I starve to death in a single turn of mine.

Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again - nets are OP as hell. Seriously, anyone having trouble winning your first game, the best advice I can give you is to horde any nets you see. Even without throwing skill, they can get you out of a shedload of trouble.

^This. Wands, especially ones which disable, work just as well most of the time.

See, those Death Cobs! They're crazy now.

Yep. Dispel Undead works wonders against them though.

I have had a lot of promising Dithmenos characters yet I have only won one. It's not a god that gives you a big safety net.

My experience with Dithmenos is that he works AMAZINGLY with stealth people and people who use hexes. The thing is, that's almost all he does. For those that stealth/hexes don't work on, Dith doesn't have that much going for him. Its really fun instakilling things and uniques via stabbing, but when that DOESN'T work, things get hairy. I guess using crossows would probably help compensate for that, though.



EDIT:

After littering the first few floors of the dungeon with failed casters, I finally seem to have gotten a decentish one going. I've got half-decent equipment for once, although I still only have my starting spellbook for magic. That's basically the opposite of my last mage character, heh.

Yes, exactly. The Dithmenos character I won, ironically, was not a real stabber, but a Ds with the -LOS mutation. I actually got him through an entire zig. Mummy floors were a breeze because of the shadow mimicing of control and dispel undead. Hexes work great for double chances on Discord and E. Hibernation.

You might consider clearing Crypt, Hell Knights sometimes spawn on the third level and they sometimes have demon whips. If you're feeling really brave, the vestibule of Hell is almost guaranteed to have balrugs with demon whips. Brand one of those with distortion and you've got it made. But making it to V:4 with a +1 whip really demonstrates the power of the elec brand.

So I've been rolling VpEn stabbers (which are super fun imo) of Gozag. My last one stupidly died to orcs, but during his short life he found like eight books. He was swimming in high level hexes he couldn't cast. My current one is doing better; maybe he'll survive long enough to actually afford some of Gozag's abilities.

Edit: and he's dead! after buying the Fencer's gloves! Killed by a player ghost...

Any reason you went with freezing brand, Graven? You still had the distortion gift, which really shines on a fast weapon like a d-whip (although, of course, I can see why you wouldn't want to blink monsters around without any strong ranged attacks, but I thought constriction prevented that? I dunno). I was surprised to learn that orbs of fire actually resist cold, but it's still handy in Zot for draconians. Good job on the win!

I'm amazed sometimes by how quickly, in real-time terms, you guys seem to finish your games. Four hours for a 5-rune win seems crazy to me. Admittedly, I waste quite a bit of time alt-tabbing, or watching TV as I play or whatever, but even so. Four hours. Do you not fully explore every floor or something?
Crawl speedruns are something else. IIRC the record for a three-rune game is a little over half an hour, and someone in this tournament just got a 15-runer in under 20k turns. How?

Ok, this VpEn is doing better than previous attempts. I found a vampiric dagger, which is always nice, and thanks to Gozag I could buy several expensive books in Orc:4. The last time I found Discord on a VpEn I was really impressed with it; and this time I've got Invis and summons to help against high MR foes. Hopefully I don't splat this guy 5 minutes later like the last one. Also, which of the high-level summoning spells do you guys recommend? Greater demon, Malign gateway, or Horrible things? I've got the book with all three, but unfortunately they've removed Aura of Abjuration, so I'm worried about hostile fiends, and the other two spells I've never used.
