Tell them that yes, you would certainly appreciate one of their number as you set forth for adventure!

One of the trees shuffles back towards you, and you see the knots in its bark almost seem to form a face. You can even imagine the lips  move as it speaks.

’My name is Elm. I will lead you for now, trollchild.’

Elm proves to be a silent travelling companion, though it picks up a surprising turn of speed once it fully uproots itself. Meanwhile, you follow, and spend your time thinking.

Why had you been chosen for this quest? Surely it couldn’t just be down to dumb chance, right? What kind of world would it be where that could happen. But no, it had to be something. Maybe it was your RAGE, every time you were the butt of another joke you didn’t understand. Maybe your skill with blades from that brief stint in the militia, or your fists of iron from the longer stints in the bar. It could even be your unshakable faith in a higher power, and not just a more intelligent one. Though maybe it was just your will to survive, proven through the war. Hell, maybe it was just something powerful in your blood.

Maybe the realisation might even give you some insight into your own talents.

[[Companion get: Elm, Treant Druid.]]

No way It was Blind Chance. We're not a hero, we're a random farmer, an idiot with a lump of coal. Own it, live it, be it.

Actually, I've got agree with Ozarck here. Blind Chance. We're basically a farmer who got stuck with a lump of coal.

We must take pride where we can of our agricultural heritage and our simple roots. Our only lament could be that we didn't bring a pitchfork or something with us..

Perhaps that's just what it is. Dumb luck. Not good luck. Not bad luck. Dumb luck. The kind you can't trust. O.o

Maybe though, it was all wishful thinking. Hell, maybe it was just fluke - deaf dumb and blind luck. Not even particularly good luck in retrospect. But hey, you take what you’re given and you run with it.

Not that you’re running much at the moment. You reach the start of the mountains true about midday, having set up a cold camp and eaten one set of your rations the previous night. Elm maintains its silence, and you match it and follow. The mountains themselves loom high above you, the range that fills the centre of the kingdom. The Deep Halls lies somewhere in there - as do the trolls.

A choice provides itself quickly - you reach a valley, scree coating its sides. The bottom seems an easy path, through the valley quickly twists out of sight. The left side rises steeply, and looks to be a difficult climb up slippery rocks, though the top seems like it might afford a good view of the path ahead. the right, meanwhile, is much gentler, but is dotted with caves, small enough that you would have to crouch to enter, but numbering in the dozens. Elm offers no opinion.

[[Trait get: Dumb luck - critical fails will have a positive twist, not that that will always help.]]
