"Technically we shipgirls -Kanmusu, if you prefer the Japanese term- are spirits of ships. Sometimes other large crewed vessels or significant objects get spirits too, but generally it's almost always ships, plus occasionally military installations. And yes, physically I may sometimes appear to be a machine, or sometimes appear to be human. The current prevailing hypothesis is that we kanmusu occupy a quantum state between flesh and blood; and iron and steel, though the details change depending on what we're doing. Like, if I'm out on the water I'm a lot more ship. When talking to you, I'm a lot more girl! It's really very interesting, if you're into that sort of thing. Which I am!"

She adds vague gestures to help with the explanation.

"Yes. Of course. Beep boop." Alice replies to Yamal.

"Then you may or may not  know that splitting the atom can produce incredible amounts of energy! In fact, I only need 500 kilograms of uranium isotopes to generate power for those four years!" She grins brightly at Alice.  "Fusing light atoms instead of splitting heavy atoms for energy is also a thing, but we haven't quite gotten there yet. Though maybe the people who built this ship have, who can say? It'd be interesting to see this ship's power core in any event! Unless it's entirely solar-powered, which seems unlikely."

"So, what are your guy's labcoats made of? Seeing as you wear them casually I assume it's either protective or comfortable."

Yamal adjusts hers and flashes him a thumbs up. "Very comfortable. Plus it's stylish."
