  • Create a "lit" tower. That is, have magma every other layer, separated from the main pathways by glass blocks. Both warm and well-lit!
  • Carve away a mountain until all that's left is my fortress - hewn, smoothed, and engraved natural rock.
  • Create a trade depot on a drop-trap that's held up by a single support and drops all the way to the magma sea.
  • Same as previous, but instead of a trade depot, it replaces the "airlock" I have now that leads to the caverns.
  • Create a town within the mountain. Carve away two or three z-levels of "air space" above each building. Who says dwarves need to be agoraphobic?
  • Create a ramp that goes from one edge of the map down to the first cavern - where the only entrance to my fort is.
  • Learn how to use minecarts.

Resurrect my dead civilization and turn the king into a megabeast slaughtering badass.
Already well on the way to accomplishing both of them.

Lose. I've somehow never managed to stick with a game long enough to accomplish this. I'm currently embarking on an extremely fun biome and seeing what happens.

Also, designing a fortress that runs and looks good enough for me to feel comfortable retiring it.

I always have a few dreams that I'd like to one day fulfill. A few include, in no specific order:

 Fortress Mode Goals:
   1. successfully create a Mountain Home.
   2. create a cloth industry
   3. create an aesthetically pleasing fort
   4. breed War Rhinos
   5. breed war Dragons
   6. create a working military
   7. successfully create a mountain home in the mouth of a volcano
   8. replace all my wooden barrels with clay pots
   9. not die from clowns

Adventure Mode Goals:
   1. shove a pixie, fairy, or firefly into a vial and use it as a lantern.
   2. successfully manage to collect a pot of bees to throw at my enemies.
   3. create a character whose only weapons are 30+ knives and daggers. (master thrower)
   4. become a martial artist monk, capable of pounding demons to a pulp with his bare hands.
   5. Create a character whose sole weapon is a crossbow and a crap-ton of vials of poison
   6. work my way up to the head of a massive empire.
   7. Have some form of trophy from every significant kill I've had.
   8.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
   9.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
   10. Learn necromancy, then raid every tomb, crypt, and temple, making sure to raise every well known war general and hero from their graves, after which I then over-throw a government.
   11. Have a "pet". (toss some vermin into my backpack and ensure it never leaves my side)

You can find those treasure troves without third-party help by making an XML dump (it's in Legends mode somewhere, where all the map and site export options are). Get the coordinates from there, export a map of the world, and then find the map tiles that match the coordinates.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

live long enough in RL to see DF optimized to the extent where 100dorf fortress runs with at least 80 fps

Make my fortress a reenactment of DOOM.

1. Wait for next version to come out.
2. Build a mega-church to the god of something fun (Magma and gold?).
3. ? Big library ?
4. ? Militia unit composed entirely of honey badger men? ?

simple goals:
-- have a military and defense strategy which can defeat sieges with little losses without just walling myself off
-- good farms
-- clothed dwarves

1. Get to a point where I stop just tinkering with my mod and actually play the game.
2. I've heard myths that a militia can have uniforms and follow a training schedule.  I'd like to get that functioning.
3. Figure out animal training.
4. Dye something.

I'm revising some of my quickfort doodles to account for temple / tavern / library type megastructures.

Trying to lay something out that will incorporate most of the new features in one seamless structure, while still being thematically appropriate.

Some sort of cross between Kaaba, the Library at Alexandria, and Büyük Han.

of course, I never really get past the general concept of the Peter Jackson style underground Luxor, so my designs are inevitably styled like megalithic colonnades.

-get rid of all the dead g's and &'s on the map with my 12 remaining dwarves ( a long story) and wait for more resistant dwarves to migrate, also build 79 coffins.

also i'm building a magma river around the fort

And finish my 20x20 danger room

Starting wars is tricky. Winning wars is just outlasting the enemy's ability to siege you. Enslavement doesn't happen, nor does absorption. It can happen for other parts of your civ, but not by your hand. Can't interact with gods on any meaningful level yet, and no way to take over the world short of claiming sites in the name of your group and running everywhere.

Not worth doing YET but Toady is working on it.

My personal goals are to keep interest, learn as much as I can across different embarks, and do Science for myself and others. My dream won't be realized until Toady implements ways to export people to other sites, attack them, and loot them.

You can win wars in adventure mode if you play your cards right (and have played crusader kings)

Absorbtion happens, and can happen in fortresses you retire just not directly by you.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

you can defy gods more efficiently in the next version since you can get cursed for profaning and profane their temples.

I personally like going around and assassinating lords ad ladie sin adventure mode to cause/stop wars.

I have successfully assassinated a king and killed his entire family once.

(some other family become the rulers after this and I became a hearthperson)

DF is story, and so I try to create a practical fortress and a story from it.
