Why did a dark magic user decide to just wipe out a church, anyway? Dark magic isn't necessarily evil.

Bluex: Being new to FEFs doesn't mean you can't have a good backstory. You can still have a dark backstory and have it make sense with your character's power level. Like maybe instead of killing the dark mage, she escapes with all the children, still saving their lives but not doing something unreasonable for her power level. Etc.

That also lets Haspen have fun with putting that Dark Mage later, like a bunch of character's relatives in FEF 2.
