Latest projections have Dorian turning early, and doing minimal damage to Florida. It is expected to catch a good chunk of the Carolinas however.

For the last couple days though, Dorian has just been hovering over the Bahamas. They're pretty thoroughly destroyed at this point.

"High category hurricane decided to sit on someone for a day" describes it plenty well, perhaps unfortunately. Since that's more or less what literally happened.

What are the Bahamas made of? I'm originally from an area with a lot of sounds/sandbars/small islands and some of those can just goddam vanish in a storm like that, or at the very least be significantly altered.

I hope we're going to offer some kind of humanitarian support, that article says a lot are outright calling for rescue. (obligatory papertowl.jpg)

We have allegedly sent a state department group to talk about what they need.

The highest point in the Bahamas is only 206 feet above sea level.  It's not even really a mountain, it's more like a hill.

If the storm surge is 30 feet.  That's like if the oceans suddenly all rose to 15% of the height of mount everest (4350ft)  and everybody in the world below that height was just SOL.

Like, I have trouble emphasizing this enough. The relative near harmlessness of even fairly rainy cat 1-3 hurricanes seem to make it hard to get across (though they're perfectly capable of flooding the hell out of something, be it by rain or surge). But a cat 4+ storm will fuck everything it touches. And one just functionally sat on top of those islands for something like a full goddamn day.

They basically had a island+ sized tornado idle over their head for like 24 hours. High cat hurricanes aren't storms so much as a personal fuck everything straight from Gaia to whatever's in its way. And as others have noted, surge+lowland island = screwed. Well, extra screwed. The winds did their own share of embuggering.

Highest point in the Bahamas is 206 feet. But that's on Cat Island, which only caught the edge of the hurricane. Highest point on Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is, and where the hurricane spent most of it's time hovering, is only 40 feet. 20-30 foot storm surge, and your HIGHEST point, is only 40 feet.

Storm surge is going to be the biggest threat on the Carolina coasts. Charleston may see storm surges on par with Hugo, which was eerily similar in that it camped out over Charleston for close to 3 days.

Like last year, I embrace death. Unlike last year, I do it from behind office walls, so I've got that going for me.

I had the random thought:

What if the hurricane instead went south into brazil, extinguishing the amazon rain forest?

Not even physically possible in the first place given atmospheric circulation and it’d lose most of its rain by the time it got inland far enough.
