Beheading the Serpents
« Reply #510 on: October 02, 2015, 11:10:46 am »

“When able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.” – Ancient Warmaster Sun Tzu from the “The Art of War”

Duke Flavius Li Halan’s journey to Midian was an uneventful one and during the transit from Kish he read a reproduction of Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” which his father gifted to him on his 13th birthday.  It was a family heirloom printed on Aragon over 150 years ago, the pages now yellow and brittle, nevertheless the knowledge possessed inside it was timeless.  Flavius thought how he was never meant to rule the Li Halan, the third and youngest son, he was meant to serve out his years on the battlefield or in the service of the Church.  Unfortunately, the Pancreator had different plans for him.

Now he stood on the Command Deck of the Li Halan Royal Cruiser “Righteous Path” in orbit above Midian.  His son  Augustus Zhu Li Halan, the Duke of Midian, standing by his side reviewing upcoming battle plans.

After, years of war with the Holy Church and the Merchant League the Duke’s stratagem for victory was finally coming together, a swift and decisive strike that would bring the League and Church’s aggression against the nobles to an end.  An objective which his commanders had code named “Beheading the Serpents”.

General Hiromoto who had been briefing Duke Flavius about the final details of the multiple missions said, “My Lord, all of our assets are now in position shall I send the orders to commence the attacks.”

Lord Flavius standing with his hands linked together behind his back, slightly bent over looking down at a flat top table display showing a digital layout of the Li Halan forces and their intended targets, simply turned towards the General and nodded in a gesture of affirmation.

“Secret operations are essential in war; upon them the army relies to make its every move.” – Ancient Warmaster Sun Tzu from the “The Art of War”

Captain Su Lee’s squad remained concealed in the swamps adjacent to the Port Authority’s compound on Byzantium Secundus.  The genetically engineered soldiers had already spent twelve hours under camouflage in the freezing waters.  Their bodies genetically modified to adapt to all types of harsh conditions.  Her communicator buzzed and she reviewed the incoming orders, she raised her right hand and suddenly dropped it. Within moments muffled pops filled the air and projectiles from high powered rifles whizzed by overhead.  Through her range finding binoculars she saw multiple Muster Sentries crumple and fall to the ground at the same time.  She made another gesture with her hand and the squad rose from the swamp’s murky waters and moved forward toward the compound to complete their mission.

“Opportunities multiply as they are seized.” – Ancient Warmaster Sun Tzu from the “The Art of War”

Duke Flavius had no interest in the planet of Madoc other than establishing a base of operations for the Imperial Eye while he served as its Minister, and on occasion the use of its jump lanes to transport personnel and equipment between Byzantium Secundus and Midian.

With the passage of the “Byzantium Covert Restrainment Act” the bulk of the Li Halan Elite Forces were now en route to Midian.  The Duke saw an opportunity appear from these circumstances that he could not let pass him by so he ordered General Hiromoto to add one last target to the mission roster for Operation “Beheading the Serpents”.  If successful he thought, it would be a well received gift for the new Lady Regent Santiago Hazat.

”Speed is the essence of war. Take advantage of the enemy's unpreparedness; travel by unexpected routes and strike him where he has taken no precautions.”  – Ancient Warmaster Sun Tzu from the “The Art of War”

“Damn her, Damn her, Damn her!!!” thought Scraver Captain Lars Masterson  as he sat drinking alone in his quarters.  His curses were for the Baroness Cassandra Li Halan.  The Baroness while in control of the Imperial Eye had developed an extensive dossier on the Scraver Smuggler.  She had determined that he had quite and large merchant fleet of smugglers and operated a rather impressive network of ships that ran illicit contraband throughout Known Worlds from Leaguehiem to Holy Terra under the guise of pilgrim convoys.  As pious as many would like to believe the Home Guard of Holy Terra may be, the captain always knew which customs inspectors would look the other way for the right amount of firebirds to fill their purse.

The Baroness had used the resources of the Imperial Eye to either physically or electronically seize his financial assets throughout the Known Worlds, and in return for his cooperation that money would be returned and he and his crews would be offered sanctuary under the protection of the Li Halan on Kish with estates and riches of their own.  However, if he follows the Li Halan’s demands he and his men will be marked for death as traitors by the Scravers Guild.  He poured himself another glass of Madocian Rum then drank it down in one swift gulp.

Suddenly, an intercom buzzed and his first mate’s voice filled the air, “Captain, the Li Halan have sent orders to launch.” The Captain sighed then replied, “Aye! Tell our transports at Leaguehiem, Madoc, and Holy Terra to proceed!”

On a completely unrelated note, Ibn Don would like to inform anyone that it might concern, that he regards Madoc as lying under his sphere of influence, and any attempt to steal al-Malik spoils of the long and bloody war against the Scravers will be taken as a declaration of war on the house itself.

Breaking News: Li Halan Raids Seize War Criminals
« Reply #513 on: October 02, 2015, 02:40:58 pm »

***BREAKING NEWS***

Good Evening this Jonathan Slough coming to you live from Embassy Row on Byznatium Secundus, earlier today we received news that a series of Li Halan raids were conducted simultaneously on Holy Terra, Leaguehiem, and Madoc against Church and League forces.  We are now going live to the Li Halan Embassy where their representative, Ambassador Wei Lan, will make a statement.

"Fellow Citizens of the Known Worlds for too long the peace created by the late Emperor Vladimir has been shattered by the petty and selfish ambitions of the corrupt forces in the Holy Church and the Merchant League.  That ends today, as we speak the "Mad Patriarch" and "Leaguemeister" are in route to Byzantium Secundus to be presented to Imperial Authorities, also the scepters that was in their possession are also en route to be distributed among the Noble Houses as compensation for the past aggression, and will forever remove the Church's and League's influence from Imperial Elections."

"Also, the influence of the Merchant League has been removed from the Scravers Guild on Madoc and is currently under the control of Li Halan forces.  Which we will transfer to the Regency under the authority of the Imperial Eye at their earliest convenience."

While the Lady Regent is away on travel, she has authorized me to state that she is very disappointed in all of you.

Respectfully,

Dear Roberto,

When you have a chance to speak to the Lady Regent, please inquire with her to whom she wishes our forces to hand the Patriarch and Leaguemeister over to once they arrive at Byzantium Secundus.  We assumed turning them over to the Imperial Eye for detainment, but we shall await the Regent's direction.  Since she may wish to question them in person.

Most Humbly,

Duke Flavius Li Halan

Most Opulent and Wise Duke Ibn Donald Al-Malik and Fellow Nobles,

Before I begin may I praise the Al-Malik's recent victories on Madoc against the Scravers Guild which have been outstanding, and your single handed capture of the majority of the Merchant League Fleet shall be remembered for generations.

However, before we venture down the path of armed conflict between our two houses that we will both regret I will first offer an olive branch.  I will relinquish my holdings on Madoc, but only to the Regency/Imperial Eye and you return the gem mine you captured from Lord Vladimir Decados and the Imperial Eye on the southern continent.  In return, I will deliver to Criticorum, two of the scepters that I procured from the Church and the Merchant League to be bequeathed to House Al-Malik.

I know what you are thinking, why should you do that? Ibn Donald has a massive amount of troops ready to crush the Li Halan garisson on Madoc.  Ibn Donald possesses the largest Armada in the Known Worlds. Ibn Donald is the Ibn Donald.

But let me remind you that if this war begins, you will have been the one that started it, and while the Li Halan abhor violence we will defend ourselves and rather aggressively.

Also, we most humbly ask that you please provide us all with your final decision and soon, because while I do not speak for the Decados, but you have already declared an unprovoked war on them, I hope you don't mind that I have taken the liberty to provide them with your troop locations on Madoc to bombard with the Imperial Eye Fleet should they feel that they you are a continued impending threat to their holdings this year, as well as, the location of your landed starships for capture if necessary which I believe would be a most impressive addition to the Imperial Eye Fleet.

Most Humbly,

Duke Flavius Li Halan

Don't try to out-Donald me, Flavius. I am THE Donald and you won't be able to use your cheap tricks against me.
You had no right to capture Madoc palace complex, no earlier presence on the planet, good knowledge of my intentions and a direct warning beforehand not to proceed. You have declared war on house al-Malik the moment you gave the order to attack the Scravers holdout.

Nor for that matter had you any right to capture the heads of League and Church without first consulting and gaining approval of the other houses. Haven't you seen just recently how much effort and bickering went into passing and enforcing laws to control much less significant issues regarding the Empire?

You've been acting like you're the Regent yourself, or Emperor even - taking it upon yourself to decide momentous matters of the Empire, again and again. First by planting the assassins in the Capital, then  by disrupting the ages-old power balance, and now you're ordering the Fleet and the Eye, to do your bidding and cover your holier-than-thou arse for the aggression and stupid mistakes you've made.

In my eyes, you've lost all respect and credibility, and if it were my decision only, I'd tell you me piece of mind while standing in the ruins of your palace.
But I'm a citizen of the Empire, and am committed to supporting it despite all insults, petty or otherwise, especially from lightweights like you, Flavius.

That's why I'm going to take what's mine on Madoc, as is my right, and will not pursue the matter further. You will, however, have to take the Pyre route to the Capital until I'm calmed down, I'm afraid.

The unlawful capture of sceptors is a matter I'll leave to the judgement of the Senate.

(The beginning of a slow clap increasing in cadence)

Bravo, Bravisimo..,,,

Duke Ibn Donald you truly are a masterful orator and thanks to you your words have now provided me with a singular piece of information that I needed to know.

Li Halan truly had no interest in Madoc it was merely at test to determine the mettle and friendship of some of our noble cousins.  While some passed with flying colors, others "well" not so much.  You see, Ibn Donald I can always trust to know where you stand but the other nobles play the games of politics much more subtlety and profoundly than you.  Thank you for assisting me in sorting those individuals out in this social experiment.

If you will hold off attacking me till my next turn, I will remove all of my troops from Madoc, and you can easily occupy the Capitol without any bloodshed and an added bonus I won't even travel through Madoc's or Criticorm's space lanes ever again since I now have forces and resources I need already in place at Byzatium Secundus.  I promise this is not some type of ruse, I will be gone to never darken your door again.

Please let me know if this is acceptable, and may your reign of Madoc be long and fruitful!!!

Most Humbly,

Duke Flavius Li Halan

Pfft. So you've failed to garner the support you were hoping for, and are now running with your tail between your legs and setting a smokescreen of vacuous farts to save your face as you scurry away. How subtle a game you play indeed.

I'll let you know if I'll let your clandestine henchmen get off easy or not, before the year's passed. For all I know they're rapists and drug dealers, but some of them, I assume, are good people.

What happens next very much depends on the decision of the Senate how to treat your other, much more grave transgressions and whether you comply or not.

Speaking of which, it should be noted that the solution House al-Malik favours is freeing of both the Patriarch and the Leaguemeister, and allowing their respective military forces to retake the voting scepters in their original resting places.
The traditional division of power must continue least the Empire falls apart.

(If it were for me, I'd also order a wall built around Li Halan jumpgates, hire them to build it, and then fire them for the inevitably shitty job they'd do.)

Lord Ibn Donald,

Dealing with you is most frustrating, and I have exhausted my patience.  So here is what is going to happen.

First, I will give each house two scepters each including your miserable inbred ridden excuse for a third rate no better than a common merchant house.  They will be landed outside your Embassy on Byzantium Secundus, take them, don't take them, shove them up your turban, I don't care.

Second, I will allow you to attack my troops on Madoc, they are all prepared to give their lives for the greater glory, etc., etc., etc., of the House Li Halan.

Third, I will then take all of Madoc from you, and I don't mean conquer it for the Li Halan, I mean take it completely from you and when I am done the memory any Al-Malik ever setting foot on the planet will have been forgotten like one of your ex-wives.

Fourth, I am going to destroy your entire fleet, every ship you have ever captured or built, every single one.

Lastly, you're FIRED!!!  Literally, I am going to fire you out of a meson cannon directly into the closest star.

Most Humbly,

Duke Flavius Li Halan

P.S. Yes, this a declaration of war, and I advise all other houses to stay out of the way!  It is going to get messy!

P.S.S. I reserve the right to add more things to this list that I am going to horribly do to the House Al-Malik.  :D

P.S.S.S. This is my last public message for the foreseeable future, all requests and questions should me sent to House Li Halan through private correspondence via a personal message.  (Drop the Mic, Flavius OUT!!!)
