I mean... you were the dude specifically chosen by a shadowy council of the most powerful nations on earth in order to fend off an existential threat.
They probably wouldn't hire any old Jim off the street.

Not to mention look at Bradfords performance in the Tutorial level, there's a reason you end up running the squads afterwords.

Everyone knows the commander is special because of his power to turn back time via the psychic phenomena called "save scum."

Bradford's a bit more...rip and tear than he is a commander. We are talking about a man who's role in the big plan is to walk up to an Advent security checkpoint, "Mor Balatan" them, and then nearly get blown the fuck up.

Even in Enemy Within he's got some shades of the crazy starting to form, what with the secret under-desk pistol and going down shooting if you lose Base Defense.

And let's not forget Bradford's performance in the Enemy Unknown tutorial mission.

Bradbert:"Gentlemen, we're heading into a very dangerous mission with lots of unknown factors.  I want you to exercise extreme caution at all times."

Moi:"Roger that, command"

Bradbert:"Now, use up all your movement by dashing madly ahead with everybody, and make sure to cluster around explosive objects with lots of flanks"

Yours Truly:"...Uh, sir, I think-"

Bradbert:"DASH!  DASH!  I MUST SEE THE DASHING, I LOVE DASHING!  SO HAPPY AND FREE!"

Still Me:"Fine, yes sir, right away."

Brad:"Now, I want you to jump through that window into the unexplored dark building with no support, and make sure to dash while you're at it so you can't fire any shots."

XCOM Commander:"Sir?  Shouldn't we-"

Rad Brad:"JUMP THROUGH THE WINDOW.  I MUST SEE IT SHATTER, I LOVE IT WHEN IT SHATTERS!"

Yo Supremo:"Yes sir."

Bradminton:"Okay, see that obviously unstable man with the shotgun and grenade?  Send someone right in front of him to talk things over."

Kagus-with-a-fancy-hat:"What?  Sir, that's just stupid.  We haven't cleared the building, we have no idea what's going on here, and that man is clearly not in his right mind.  We should-"

A Brad Enough Dude:"THAT BOMB LOOKS INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS, YOU MUST SECURE IT AT ALL COSTS."

Me:"Fuck you, sir."

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

His performance in the Xcom 2's intro/tutorial wasn't much better.

I like to imagine when the commander asks why the ship in XCOM2 is still full of wreckage, the crew just look at each other and reply "Bradford."

The aliens being unbeatable makes perfect sense if you remember that Bradford was incharge.

Decent? Man's a beast in the Alien Rulers intro mission. But yeah, not a commander at all.

Are we talking about the same Bradford that managed to hold the Resistance against the Commandy One led ADVENT forces?

Because that's rather impressive, you know.

I never said he didn't have strategic sense. He could be a god at commanding an organization. It's just he's crap at commanding units in the field :P

Bradford's accomplishments are good, yes, but they are based more in a refusal to be broken by staggering odds and being able to outfly fighters in a supply barge than any strategic skill.

The resistance doesn't even have a cohesive network until the Commander returns.

And we got to see first hand exactly how he did it! By sending waves after waves of his best soldiers to be slaughtered.
