Or, yanno, go play X-Com. It's not like DOSBox isn't a thing.

Or OpenXcom, for modern support, bug fixes, and mods, rather than Dosbox.

That makes me a little disappointed that XCOM 2 isn't the highly-forshadowed "Oh shit we have advanced alien weapon and bionic technology, what do" period.  Where old enmities between the nations of Earth are rekindled by this dump of absurdly dangerous tech.

Fact is...  Exalt-like groups would have come about without the aliens.  Vicious genemodded stormtroopers, I mean.  They even could have kept XCOM as an "extra-legal" entity, trying to stomp out brushfires and manage a rapidly developing world crisis.

Oh wait, mods! :D

Postedit:  Yes yes I want XCOM Apocalypse, in a modern engine!
I can imagine that after the aliens have been defeated, there would still be Chrysallid infestations around, too. And disorganised alien groups, if you don't handwave it as "died by psychic shock"

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

In oldcom the Mutons would die:  "They appear to rely on telepathic commands from a race known as 'Ethereals'. Once separated from this telepathic link their mental system appears to break down and they die."
Dunno if that got into NewCOM or not.  But surviving aliens holing up in remote areas could certainly be a thing.  Plenty of possibilities...  They hide underwater (heehee), or in areas ravaged by nukes.  Using cobbled-together cloning or hybridization tech could make for interesting new enemy types, with the originals being rare and relatively powerful.

@openXCOM
Hell actually I think I will play some more openXCOM, there are so many cool mods for it.
Or UFO Extraterrestrials, since it has amazing UI features like "Will I be able to shoot an enemy from this location?  Just wait half a second and see an indicator!".  It's basically OldCOM but longer, more interesting dogfighting, and more interesting items like personal shields.
Or I might go back and do that UFO Aftershock LP I started and abandoned...  :-[
heck I even have an Apocalypse save to resume but it was getting tedious and freezing a lot.

Lots of great options, but I'm really looking forward to XCOM 2!

Unlikely to happen, but at least OpenApoc is going to be a thing?
So one day, in the distant future, Apoc can be fixed and become the awesome game it almost is.

Saw my first in store ad for XCom2. Preorder bonus through us is the early unlock of a character. I'm willing to bet money that the character is Bradford. You also get the "Resistance Warrior Pack," which appears to be extra customization options.

Why would it be Bradford? Isn't he just going to be doing the same thing he did last time?

Pretty sure the character you get is just a regular randomly-generated guy but with a higher rank than normal.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

It's just an extra guy in the barracks who wears the old XCOM armor outfit by default IIRC

If it's just a randomized dude that's even more dumb considering that they're releasing mod tools so you could easily just do the same thing yourself...

A look at shantytown maps.

That last line seems to be implying that the collateral damage PR stick from apocalypse might be in the game...
