Had a few keas coming to do what keas do best, annoying the hell out of my dwarves, and i noticed one of them managed to get inside my fortress and attack a child.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm so proud of that dwarven child

Dwarven child cancels hunt for small creature: experiencing emotional shock.
Two children died on a tree.
How the heck did they get up there?

Edit*
I also found a great horned owl corpse there, maybe they were fighting?

Check the combat screen (key r ) , this list when animals and childs are fighting too.
If the childs weren't fighting in the combat screen, it's then possible a hunter of your fortress killed the orn and the child were close enough to be afraid of the kill (and when afraid, the AI gain the ability to climb, sadly they don't have any ability to climb down out of being afraid or being in combat themselves, so they always stupidly will starve to death, i hope Toady will finally fix that , it's been annoying since 40.x), not all dwarven child are fearless kea-destroyers terminators :D

Don't ask me why, but...

After hearing about the Brussels attacks, I wanted to play DF.

So I did, and beat the holy schnot out of every goblin I could find. damn terrorists

Are you sure the ruler/your King Consort's spouse is a dude? I ask because I've noticed that the Legends Viewer labels the ruler a "king" without regard to their gender.

Gender isn't taken into account when determining inheritance in DF, so "King Consort" is also the title given to the husband of a ruling Queen.

I was sure of gender because "The king consort punches the goblin pikeman corpse in the head with his right hand". However, I made a false assumption that the guy is MY king's consort. I checked legends, and it turns out my king has a female consort. The guy who visited my site was a consort of a female queen of another dwarven civ, not mine. So maybe the dwarves want to have a ruling dynasty after all.

So just imagine the international incident that would've occurred if your dwarves went and started calling their king gay thanks to a foreign king consort. o3o

For the first time in years, DF.exe froze up.

I noticed a prisoner in jail that was flashing between a standing upright, and sitting/lying down symbol. He had a proper no job (chained) job.
I locked the doors to see if a path fail would snap him out of his push-ups. But when I unpaused, the game froze and popped a dwarf fortress.exe is not responding message.

I don't think the dwarves would have minded having a gay king. They don't seem particularly fussed.

Only interesting thing happening in my fort is a mysterious vampire visitor. Otherwise I've got plenty of galena (silver) deposits to trade for, enough food and drink to last me for over a year (so no sieges no matter how large can threaten me) and have had no attacks yet outside of thieves stealing something from outside.

Normally no. But if there was a simulation of court, with associations and intrigues, then that would instabilize the country. That's because the nobles would know there is no heir and will be no heir, so they can start the intrigues right away, maybe even a coup, because the "continuation of rule of law is endangered" and all that feudal crap. I think it would be better, if gay king's had a consort of opposite gender and a lover (or more, they are kings after all) of the same gender. Would be more in line with real life. But currently it won't happen, I believe.

Bloodspatters finally got retired.  It was hard getting dug in to the Terrifying reanimating biome with the constant undead kangaroos, ostriches and horned owls wandering through the fields of wormy tendrils, but doable.  Since there was an aquifer in this biome, I settled on an existing lair and walled the poor giantess into her living room - she finally met her end to an undead elk bird in the second year.  The one brief incursion from the Tower down the road ended ignominiously, with three zombies and a necromancer in cages which proved to be less than lavaproof.  Same for the goblin fort, where the two kidnappers who managed to make it through the wildlife ran into the training military just inside the door and forgot they were standing on cage traps.  Ta for the bag and the knife... now it's off the lava chute with you, lad.

So what happened?  The fort was up to about 70 residents, despite the constant slaughter.  I had gotten probably ~70% of the scattered items and bodies from the failed attempts to get the fort up and running gathered up and sorted.  A giant migrant wave arrived, probably 30 dwarves... at the same time as a wave of undead ostriches... and a werebear... and a stibnite web-spitting thrush FB.  The militia killed the bear, but not before he had bitten a few of the new dwarves.  The ostriches killed a few, and stressed the rest.  Then the corpses started getting back up again.  Right about the time I got the last corpse-bit queued to go and meet Armok in the dump shaft, a murderous ghost showed up in the dining hall and the two haulers transformed in the middle of the dining hall as well.

Sighing, I retired it.  I knew that no matter how much !!FUN!! could come later, it wasn't going to top that.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

Starting my first fort in the new version. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do, but it will involve enormous walls.

This would also require the dwarven concept of marriage, or commitments in general, to be expanded. Right now it's one potential committed relationship, and widowed dwarves never remarry (assuming the wiki remains correct).
