A migrant drew my attention, a high level weaponsmith, "great, i thought'
Later this dwarf got into a fey mood, so i rushed the metal industry which i hadnt started yet. With some micromanagement i got her to pick steel bars to make her artifact.
The result was "Shovedfences the Viper of Flames" a steel battleaxe which menaces with spikes of steel. It was worth 150000, which at that moment was more than the whole fortress.
Naturally i built a noble level house for this dwarf, with all the furniture made of gold, except the bed. Later i added an artifact coffer.
When the mayor was elected he demanded his own house, so i built it (nothing too fancy, just stone furniture). This wasnt enough for the snob mayor so i added a couple statues. One of the statues was a masterful image of the weaponsmith holding the Viper of Flames, relating to its creation. Screw you mayor, this is for her dining room. I moved the statue and gave the mayor a statue of a dragon killing an elf. He better likes it.

One of my three legendary miners has somehow lost her pants, and refuses to wear any that I have made. Apparently no pants are good enough for her delicate lowers, and she is very unhappy about this.

assign her to a squad and make her wear greaves. this should solve the pants problem.

Maybe she wants a skirt.

Anyway, does she have legs?

I love that question... Yes, she has legs.

I have told her to wear greaves. She is now wearing *only* greaves, and only when her one dwarf squad is set to "active", despite "inactive = uniformed".

EDIT: Fixed so that she wears the rest of her clothes too, but still only wears the greaves when set to active military duty.

EDIT: So the reason she isn't wearing any of the pants I'm making is because as soon as they are sewn together, a random baby snatches them up. I forgot, babies aren't going to be born with clothes... I must gather as much cloth as possible and mass produce pants! I have dozens and of naked babies and children... Oh dear. This fortress may fall due to a lack of pants.

I've just sold nearly 200 000 ☼'s worth of bone crafts and totems. Then I noticed I've only barely scratched the surface of my stocks.

Armok help me.

Moody dwarf made a goblin bone bed called, I shit you not, "Savanthairs the Adorable Enjoyment". There is no way I can interpret this as anything other than mockery.

So your fortress dismembers goblins and throws the bits into magma? You're not hardcore enough. My dwarves do the nasty on bits of dead goblins.

In retrospect, that's horrible.

Dwarven traders showed up. All but 1 wagon pulled into the depot, and I got the usual messages about traders have arrived and are unloading. I got my broker there, tried to trade, kept getting the "apologies, but we're still unloading" message, so I wait. Then they scuttle the wagon that didn't fit in and I'm suddenly in the "there are no merchants trading now" but they still show up in the depot? Also, everything the scuttled wagon dropped was forbidden as if I'd killed it (which I didn't).

...so confused!

I'm sorry your husband had a strange mood and ended up making a useless trinket out of useless materials without gaining any experience in the process.

I made progress, but not a huge lot of progress when again I got hit pretty hard, so I retreated a while back and set the pop cap to 200 so that I can get LOTS of workers to build those constructions in a quick pace.

Meanwhile, a human caravan came and got ABSOLUTELY WIPED OUT by a siege XD One wagon MAY have managed to escape and maybe a horse, but basically wiped out. Also, I tried to send my paralyzed from the waist down legendary axedwarf to die a heroes death, but he ended up completely owning the rest of the siege. Kept dodging like lightning, so I left him in the main axedwarf squad (which actually is made up of legendaries) and put him in the commander position. I also recruited a new dwarf into there, and while he has some skill, since he is training with legends, I figure he'll train up pretty quck.

Also, since I'm tired of waiting a year or more for replacement troops to train up, I'm going to make a danger room. Could also be useful in getting some shield skill to marksdwarves.

Any tips on danger room construction?

Edit: Whoo, that new recruit (well, not really a recruit, had some axedwarf skill) went to legendary in a few months, maybe even less than a month.

Been smokin' cats at The Hut of Rabbits. I like this method of disposal: it might save me some dwarfpower compared to butchering. Also I figured out a way to utilize my available sponge hand as the "spook mechanism" in my plot to clear the surface. Hmm, now that I think about it, I have a zombie elf too, so now I'm conflicted which one is better.

This dwarf is awesome. she killed a flame based forgotten beast, who threw a fireball at her, and lived to tell the tale! too bad she might go insane soon.

She's not bleeding anymore, but has severe blood loss.

in the aboveground, a group of skulking vermin ambushed me right after a goblin siege and took out a legendary woodworker. none of them lived. a lot of my dwarves are very unhappy right now. might be the beginning of a tantrum spiral.

I avoid those in two ways:
1) Designate the zone being atom-smashed as a restricted traffic area. Helps a bunch of you have a dump zone under a drawbridge or something for waste disposal: dwarves not actually dumping shit will always path around.
2) Avoid the problem altogether by preventing dwarves from entering the place where the atomsmasher crushes. I use a one-z drop to a smash zone that is accessible by a door that I keep locked at all times. Since garbage zones force dwarves to chuck things in holes if holes are nearby, no dwarf need ever enter the danger zone. And I keep the smasher on manual control with a nearby lever, so that if anyone ever does need to go in there for some reason, there's no chance of the smasher automatically crushing them.

It was a dwarf that was dumping stuff and I do have a restricted pathway, it actually is on a side passageway. I'm normally careful, which is why I haven't had any atomsmasher accidents before now, but I'm bound to derp up at some point.
