Caverns breached, and before I could set defenses, a Giant Bat made a hit-and-run killing an unimportant Urist.

Then, I make a screw-up with moving a caged troll, and release it.

However, the nearby Butcher proceeds to knock it out UNARMED, make make it constantly pass out so the military kill it in a single blow to the head.

Manliest. Butcher.

In the midst of a brutal tantrum spiral, in a fort of 265 dwarves.

Right now, 203 dwarves are still alive, 98 are miserable, it's a pretty wild place.

Suddenly, this happens:

The defeat of the mud crocodile by trees however will probably take the cake. Tunnels are already being built to harness this muddy adversary.

Wait, a forgotten beast was defeated by trees? Did they grow in it's way or something?

Haha, killin dorfs to kill more dorfs. Yo dawg, I heard you like slaughter, so I put dead dorf in your dorf killer so you can kill dorf while you kill dorf.
Bone mace indeed, that's probably actually a pretty innefective weapon for bashing in heads with though. Good job on that mood, though.

If nothing else, it's a good collectible because of the story behind it.

In the earlier days of my fort, an artifact copper mace was made, too.  So, there's a set.

A wonderful set. The bone mace for the CotG/Hammerer and the copper one for the captain of the regular militia. To each leader the mace befitting their role.

2 or three goblin ambushes at once. I was not particularly well prepared for them; 10 dwarves out of 82 died.   one child got nabbed by a child-snatcher...

Only one dwarf is throwing temper tantrums, and even so, they're pretty calm about it.  Even the awfull mayor (terrible listener; only advantage is the complete lack of item preferences) isnt' making things all that much worse.  a nap later, and the tantrumer went from very unhappy to unhappy.
Did I mention, that's 10 deaths in a fort where the bedroom is a 12x12 square with overlapping bedroom designations, and no attempts to isolate dwarves from one another whatsoever?

This is a masterwork ledger.  It contains 3719356 pages on the topic of the precise number and location of stones in Spindlybrooks.  In the text, the dwarves are hauling.

Hit somewhere between 90 and 100 Urists, I paused and saved as Migrants came in.

A Mayor got elected without telling me. He's mandated a single Coffin...

I've opened up the 1st and 2nd layers of the underground, but there dosen't seem to be much actually down there.

Small military has been formed, just in case.

We've caged a few animals from the underground to be used as food, and got a good supply of animals guarding the gate from ambushes and Theives. We've also captured a GCS, but I'm afraid of doing anything too bold with it, like a Silk Farm, for the potential !!FUN!! it could cause, nor do I wish to use it for my DeathPit, since it's webs could actually be shot up the chute and web my Urists.

Speaking of Death-Pit, it's now operational. The Bridge is built over a large room with an 'airlock' system.
The bridge retracts, so I can burrow someone on there if they need an 'Unfortunate Accident', and then pull the lever, dropping them into the Death-Pit.

The only issue now is catching something sufficiently dangerous to airlock in there when it reverts to being wild, and finding a way to pit goblins in there. [So far I have an open space designated as a Pasture, but you can't drag Thieves, and not caught anything suitable to test this method yet either.]

Problem is, it has to be aggressive, not a flier [it'll escape] or a GCS [It'll just web stuff through the chute]. I've not found Crundles yet. A pit filled with angry Crundles would have been fun, especially if I keep some of them tame for Eggs.

The airlock system is pretty simple. I catch something, and train it, before pastureing it inside an 'airlock'. Each 'airlock' has a bridge each side. The animal gets locked in, and it is waited until it reverts to being wild. Then, the other side is opened, and it goes into the Pit. The Pit side is closed, and the Safe side re-opened. There are three airlocks as well, so this can be done in multiple sets at once.

Also I have a male and a female dog, but they won't breed. An output of non-pet puppies to put to War Hounds would be useful.

In an odd twist of fate, the very wolverine that killed one of my fort's horses was kicked in the head by that horse's daughter. I lost track of which horse it was by the time I thought about naming it though, so the opportunity to have Urist McEpicHorse was lost.

^^ yeah, that's what happens when a throw goes wrong - it dumps the 'thrown' creature right on top of the thrower, who will bear the brunt of the impact. It's the reason why one should be very careful when wrestling in adventurer mode: it rarely happens, but it's still immensely annoying when a trained-up adventurer suffers instant death or a broken spine because the randomiser decided 'throw' would be a good wrestling move to try on that monitor lizard and the RNG decided the opponent should be thrown _to_ the location of the adventurer.

In the fort with the lavish prisoner suite, no visitors came for two seasons in a row. Not even a measly kobold showed up to catch a look at our war giant leopards.
So in the good tradition of voodoo troubleshooting (do something probably totally unrelated to the issue, because of a crazy hunch that it might have something to do with it somehow), i caged the prisoners and put them back in their rooms. However, they were not set free within the suite, but chained up next to their bed/cabinet before locking the door. I've no idea whether 'invaders' on the map really screw up the appearance of fresh invaders, but after they all changed their status to 'chained prisoner', the next two seasons promptly reported a new ambush each. Of course, they all walked into the massive arrays of weapon traps and the only indication they were there were the jumps in the dead unit count. And the inexplicable flurries of flying limbs out of nowhere...

And breaking up the stuck three-dwarf training squad finally _has_ gotten the two somewhat-skilled rookies to spar, so they're actually gaining skill for a change. Hooray! Seriously - six years of training got them to 'talented/adept', and their level hadn't gone up for over a year solid, while less than one year with the fixed setup got them to 'expert/professional' and non-rusty defensive skills all around. The other squad, with a completely green recruit and the remaining militiadwarf of the horrible threesome, is going more slowly, because most of their training is still demonstrations, but they've sparred once or twice already, and the skilled dwarf is slowly getting rid of her skill rust. I checked their thoughts recently and they both showed 'gained a sibling recently'. They're sisters, ten years apart. Fortunately, dwarf fortress doesn't model sibling rivalry.

Completely boxed in. By trees. I've got a side project where I'm going to try and get the Mud crocodile to grow trees on itself by dropping it onto a tree.

*EDIT
Magma forges attacked by fire imp. Two Dwarves burnt, both saved by the luckiest timing of an incomplete obsidian farm flood. Fire imp dead, a steel crossbow lodged in its skull.

*EDITx2
Urist Likot Lion L. Thunen is dead, Silentthunders has lost a champion. Slain in the mid-Spring of the year 422 by his burnt injuries, his blood left him for the ground to drink.
No matter how powerful and favoured a Dwarf will be, something will always kill them.

FINNALY got a working fort in DF2012 in a tundra freezing enviroment with large serrated glass discs as entrance traps.

Trying to train up a marksdwarf squad now and then ill get into a melee squad. Still havent got enough wood for enough beds for rooms for each dwarf. A major soil layer is being dug out to accomodate a underground forest.

Killed a Monkey-Tundra-Titan who shot its spit at my dwarfs and just avoided all the traps (marksdwarves + hunter killed him).

Another day in the lives of my dwarves i guess :D
