Getting raided by Skeletal Deer one month after embarking.

Even three more days, and my compound would have been secure. ;.;

All dwarves have beards. even females.

Also: WOOHOO REACHABLE LIGNITE

YEAHHHH.

Keeps me from having to expand my perimeter inside the caverns, I've got it walled up to the ceiling, so even fliers shouldn't cause any problems.

The Elk Bird menace has been defeated. I've walled off all areas of the caverns that I'm using. Though I'm installing some cage traps regardless and will put in weapon traps later on.

It's the end of the first year, and I have 50 dwarves already. Is this normal?

The elk birds? Yes that'll happen so often that you'll go insane.

The migrants? No. Not at all.

A tantrum spiral has been going through my fortress, but it seems to be slowing down... meanwhile, a woodcutter went into a macabre mood and somehow made an iron statue out of roach remains and dog bones... and became a legendary wood crafter.

Peace and tranquility.

No merchants, No invaders, Saw Trogolodytes and a Giant Toad in my Cavern, But I've walled it off and it's nearly airtight so FLyers won't be an issue either.

This fort is positively Idyllic.

So can I still farm a GCS if I tame it?

Also just got two merchants at same time.

A mason was just possessed. He ran to the leatherworks, then bounced back and forth between it and the tannery right next door about 5 times before beginning his mysterious construction. I can't wait to see what he produces  ::)

EDIT:

Why must my artifacts always suck?

I need to capture and tame some animals so I can start breeding them and get leather.

Slowly working through my stockpile of goblin prisoners by feeding them to my champion squad, in single combat.  Also, has anyone else found the regular (read:killable) FBs to be ridiculously easy?  My 16 soldiers (admittedly most Legendary, although none with better than iron weapons) just killed 3 FBs in a row; literally one after the other ran in through the just-breached cave entrance.  Not a single injury was sustained.

up to 23 Dwarves from 17. Hopefully my new hatch holds up to the pressure this time. I've got an emergency drain for when it freezes again just in case

My first truly "successful" fort. I've got a large keep on the surface to protect my farmers and guard against cave adaptation in my military. The goblin sieges seem to come yearly now, and the bugged marksdwarves mean that I can only pull up the drawbridges and wait out the sieges.
Lumber shortages are a problem during the sieges, so I am working on an underground towercap farm in the caverns.
