I assume they would wander off into the surrounding area, but may eventually come back

Just got a migrant recently. They proceeded to run about like idiots running from safety leaving safety due to the fact i forgot to set the burrow back up and eventually all got back in due to a back door i made from the miners who ran outside. No one died, just close encounters with undead cats and dogs. The apocalypse began with zombie kestrel people btw.

Is it impossible for a volcano and a river larger than a stream or a brook to be in the same local square? I need a lot of magma and a lot of water for this project

No, it's just really rare/hard to find one.

Wow. So there's an empty pit at the top of the mountain I embarked on. And way.
Way.
Way.
WAY Down that pit...

Like...100 z levels down from the top of the pit.

Is the magma.

Is magma infinite? Like, if I pump it up that 100 z levels to the tip, will it stay there, or come back down?

Could an "airlock" system of two drawbridges keep the demons at bay well enough that they can be fought "safely"?
Also, can demons be butchered or something like that?

I would think the demons can be butchered so long as they're... For a certain value of the word normal. Don't think blobs can be but I may be wrong, and inorganic ones of course can't be. An airlock system with some bait furniture and pets should draw them in but you need to wait until none are on the outer bridge to close it or it'll deconstruct.

I might assign a pet to a pasture once Crundles begin hatching.
I have a Crundle hatchery now.

One of my leather workers just made a mini-skirt  ;) I know he's gonna be getting some fine bearded dwarvish women with that fine thing.
