Ooh, I know who Raiden is! He's the god of thunder from Mortal Kombat!

Wait, so who is snake now? Raiden or Solid?

When is 'now'? Most of the games are set in the near future or recent past of a world similar to ours except with giant robots that sound like cows, creepy ghosts and mysterious aliens.

I believe Metal Gear Rising is set the latest, in 2018? so then I suppose? For good measure, since Phantom Pain is set in the... 80s? I assume that there is no Snake as we know him.

There are no words to describe how this thread reads to a person who's never played any of this. It's like some drug-tripping David Lynch porn festival with overtones of medieval politics.

Oh, a Metal Gear general.

They gave Raiden the snake codename in the mission in 2.  The whole point of the mission was to make him as good as the original snakes.
What? Raiden is his codename. If they had called him Snake at any point it probably would have given away the ending. Also that's kind of a spoiler, but it's like 13 years old so whatever.

It's kind of sad knowing MGSV is probably going to be the last game in the whole franchise. And funny, considering Kojima's been trying to kill the series for the last 15 years.

It doesn't make any more sense if you've played them. Actually, it sort of somehow makes less sense.

Well, since I've basically no idea what you people are talking about, I might as well start a new line of discussion.  :D

I would like to know a little 'bout your naming conventions in games (mostly RPGs I guess). Do you name your character lore-wise, according to the naming standards of that specific universe? Choose a generic fantasy/sci-fi/whatever name? Or simply go batshit crazy/random? Hit me with some examples.

Thinking about it, I don't have one preference, although I tend to name the character, with which I embark on a "serious run", according to the lore, or at least make the name setting-friendly. That being said, I also make up ridiculous names and titles when appropriate, either according to the general mood of the game, or when I'm on a spoof/test/break-the-game run. A name like Kapitan Inquisitor Colacola or something.

RPG names

Oh hey, something I can contribute to.

For Roguelikes I can't make myself care; they're dead characters walking, anyway. Dungeons of Dredmor was kinda fun to make up silly stuff based on skillsets, though. Clobberella and Baron Stabbington and whathaveyou.

Most of the time I just pick from a list of names of versions fictional characters that kinda-sorta fit an archetype.

(Terry Pratchett)
Warrior women are named Angua, more sophisticated or vicious types are Serafine. I had a WoW mage named Weatherwax.

(Galaxy Quest)
If the character is a paladin-type or at least can wield a shield and mace, Ghrab Thaar it is.

(Music)
Some time ago friends and I made some WoW characters for an alt guild named the Rat Pack.
TankSinatra, BeatrLawford, GreenMartin, ShammyDavisJr, BishopJoey.
I suppose if you wanted to branch out there's also BloodyHolly and BigBopper. ElvisPriestly.
I also saw two guys playing warlocks named MattDemon and BenAfflic, though that might be lost on non-players.

1) For games where I run multiple characters (Torchlight, Diablo, most rouge-likes, etc.) I'm a big fan picking female characters and naming them "Vanessa", or "Valeria" or other "V" names for some odd reason. :P
2) For games where I run only 1 character (Pokemon, legend of Zelda, etc.) I'm a big fan of the name "Destiny", since I've yet to run into a game where it doesn't fit in the space, it works as both a guy or a girl name, and it makes all the times where characters say "it was destiny's fault" or "you can't fight your destiny" that much more hilarious.
3) For MMO's I tend to go with either a lore-based name or a name from #1, depending on what type of MMO it is, if I'm the only one who can see character names, etc..

Depends on how much I care about the world/story. My default pick is usually just my real name, or the character's canon/default name if one is given. In MMOs I just use my screen name or some variation thereof (logichan, notlogic, etc). If I'm really down to get lost in a game world, I'll try to pick something fairly plain that could either be a real name or one in the game. For example, my khajiit in Skyrim is named Ina. I always enjoy when fantasy heroes have plain names like Bob or Bill :P

Speaking of RPGs (and Skyrim in particular), are there any RPGs where marriage/romance mechanics are actually interesting and involving?

He was briefly called snake in the beginning of 2. Then the codename changed. Because that makes sense.
