Card Game Heroes RTD
« on: May 16, 2015, 06:29:14 pm »

In a world very much like our own, the most popular trading card game is called Card Game Heroes. This game is fairly well known, though not universally liked.

You are all part of the crowd watching the Battle of Paragons XLIV, in New York City. It is the final match, between champions Liu Wan and Skippy "Black Ghost" Valentine. Skippy's life is critically low, but he smirks and plays his favorite Green-Scaled Black Thunder Dragon.

Just as the card hits the table, the ground trembles. A blinding flash of light is heralded by a loud roar. Scrams can be heard, and an overwhemling wall of swamp-scented air hits. As your vision clears, there seems to be a large draconic form in the middle of the arena. It looks to be eating someone wearing Liu Wan's signature purple outfit.

This was not in the brochure.

Expected player number is 4. This is NOT first-come, first served. Sign-ups will continue for around 48 hours.

Name: Null
Age: somewhere over 60, although he's hardcore for an old man.
Interest in Card Game Heroes: (3) He's a powerful mage, but he decided to pass some time vacationing in another universe, and decided to play this card game.
Bio: He's Null. The descendant of a powerful mage also named Null, he is the head and most powerful mage in the Nevermore clan.
Backstory: He came here from his home universe in attempt to take a break from his normal majickery duties. So much for that.

Deck: Null built a deck based on another universe entirely, known as the Warrens of Oric the Awesome, which focuses on bringing the powerful minions known as the Six Sinister Siblings into play and augmenting them with powerful spells and equipment.

((I'm probably not going to get in, mainly because I believe on expressing the massive dense character sheets typically made for this sort of game via playing the game itself to build character. I show, not tell.))

I wanna be in on this. Give me a bit to make a sheet for consideration.

Name: Jason Barrister
Age: 18
Interest in Card Game Heroes: 9
Bio: Jason grew up in a very well-off family whose fortune came from investments in precious resources such as oil and gold. His parents did not try to force any planned future upon him, instead letting him do things he enjoyed. However, they did always push him to excel at the things he did, going so far as to hire private tutors and get him excellent supplies, pushing him much harder than he would have wanted. This led him to pick up and drop many activities, as his parents often made him take private lessons and practice when he would rather have been playing and the commitment quickly outweighed his interest. As he grew older, his two greatest permanent interests were art and Card Game Heroes, hobbies that even his parents could not ruin foe him.
Backstory: An aspiring artist, Jason hopes to one day draw the art for the cards of Card Game Heroes. He has built his deck around the theme of the color wheel, something he is familiar with as an artist. He convinced his parents to buy him tickets to the Battle of Paragons by telling them it would be a greater learning opportunity than he could get from a private tutor or staring at images of card art for hours.

Deck: Color Wheel (Monsters and spells based on the the primary colors, along with fusion spell cards to fuse monsters into stronger Monsters of secondary and tertiary colors. Also, primary color spells that can be fused into secondary or tertiary color spells with stronger or new effects.)

Sheet subject to possible editing later.

Name: Desmond Hendricks
Age: 27
Interest in Card Heroes: 5
Bio: Desmond has a nephew who loves the game, and so Desmond has a familiarity with the mechanics. Desmond reads military history a bit, and enjoys various puzzle games. A practical sort, Desmond was at this tournament as a merchandise vendor, and business was good. Upon the advent of the dragon, Desmond's hand fell on a set of cards somewhat accidentally. It was perhaps fortuitous that these cards were some Desmond ffelt most familiar with, as he had been idly chatting with a fellow vendor about various builds - though Desmond was paying more attention to the T-Shirt vendor making her way through the crowd behind his friend.

Deck: Area of Effect Status Control and Coordinated Action deck.

Name: Garth Garplacks

Age: 12

Interest in Card Game Heroes: 8, though not at all coupled with any form of proficiency

Bio: a greasy, chubby, flush young boy of twelve years with a surprisingly deep, if nasal voice for his age. Homeschooled by his rather odd grandmother Esther, he has been playing Card Game Heroes for three years ever since his beloved grandparent bought him a booster pack full of random cards, which he reacted to with amazing glee. They had pictures and monsters and witty descriptions and everything, and after three or more booster packs obtained after his grandmother realized the relative cheapness of the hours upon hours of amusement each of these could provide him he was already able to conjure amazing (well, to him anyway) worlds of spectacular magic, adventure and mystery to lose himself in. At the same time, he doesn't really have anyone to play the games with, as he seldom goes out, and he still doesn't have more than a cursory knowledge of the rules, if that.

Backstory: Currently about forty booster packs in (his grandmother does reward him often, good little boy that he has been ever since he realized he was being rewarded with booster packs for it), Garth felt he was ready for the big leagues, and managed to pester his grandmother (in a year otherwise filled with exemplary behavior to achieve this very goal) into taking him to New York City to check out the Battle of Paragons, and possibly find new friends to share his uncommon obsession with for the very first time.

Deck: Garth doesn't quite understand the rules, so he just takes the coolest-looking cards and puts them into one deck, hoping to amaze others with the intricate web of interpersonal relationships he has invented (though he'd maintain he deduced most of what he knows from a great deal of obvious hints and about two solid years of isolated one-boy roleplaying) for them.

Name: Elias Pulliam

Age: 21

Interest in Card Game Heroes: 6

Bio: Elias was raised in a household that had poor income and had been a hassle overcome with his desired hobbies. He learned of a card game referred as "Card Game Heroes' from the gaming media and has only been a viewer of the game to serve as a excursion for his own leisure. But over some time he decided to actually grasp the understanding of the game and quickly sought the most currently used deck used by professional players. He found a deck often regarded as extremely efficient in winning games that is extremely high paced but is regarded for the opposing player as frustrating and not interactive or what is claimed. Than after getting getting the correct cards and building the deck part out, he educated himself by the basic mechanics of the game and did some test matches with his friends. Than he went into some not renowned tournaments and made progress into decent rankings and learning from his mistakes. He is currently trying to decide whether to become professional of this game or not

Backstory: He decided to after finalizing his decks, to be a viewer of another professional match to analyze the tactics of the professionals of this game. He, after recollecting enough money from his part-time job, decided he had enough to travel to New York City to see the Battle of Paragons

Deck: This deck is often referred as a "HyperAggro" deck that is extremely aggressive trying to close out the game as fast as possible and ignoring the opposing minions but uses minion that die to summon more creatures to attack and uses spells and minions that synergies with the death of the minions. It is widely regarded as a deck that has little interaction and frustrating to play against but is often effective if not countered

This character is to represent a primary focus of a Spike (tournament player) but has a mix of the ideals of a Timmy with the ideas of a power gamer and that he is essence always focusing on trying to win. The information of the three concepts of the three personalities of Magic the Gathering are here http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/mr11b

May I ask for a analysis of this character sheet post?

Name: Johan Smith

Age: 20

Interest in Card Game Heroes: 4

Bio: Johan is just an average dude from an average family. After high school he started working as a clerk in a games store, where you first came into contact with Card Game heroes. He isn't really into the game itself, but he really enjoys collecting the cards for their great artwork. He's gotten to know the rules of the game by overseeing the small tournaments at the store he works at and has even played a few casual games. His deck is mostly just cards he finds neat, and the theme has changed several times over time. He often trades cards and plays games with his little cousin.

Backstory: His store got several tickets to the Battle of Paragons XLIV and his boss was kind enough to give one away to Johan. Since the tournament wasn't too far away he decided to come and take a look, mostly because his cousin kept nagging him about getting an autograph from his favourite player, Liu Wan.

Deck: His deck is made up of robots of various sizes. The spell cards are mostly power ups or special attacks for said robots (think drill attack or justice beam), with a few support abilities thrown in (orbital bombardment or repair bots and things like that)

Character sheet typo: Instead of both 'biography' and 'backstory,' I'd intended to include some sort of mental/personality description. Those sheets have fine descriptions, and don't need to be edited tho include it. Those of you still waiting to post who don't know how to differentiate between bio and backstory, feel free to leave one off.

((I'm probably not going to get in, mainly because I believe on expressing the massive dense character sheets typically made for this sort of game via playing the game itself to build character. I show, not tell.))
That character wouldn't work more because I find it unsatisfying to have a supposedly powerful PC who's "just holding back" in order to be on-par with the other PCs for the entire game.

Laws of magic for the universe we're playing in might not include Null's type of magic.

Name: Svante Sorenson
Age: 20
Interest in Card Game Heroes: 8, at the expense of his courses
Bio: Svante had a problem, beyond being a rather lanky man with an unruly mop of blond hair and blue eyes that screamed Scandinavian as loud as they could who couldn't build muscle mass no matter how hard he tried. He was in the middle of two relatively unemployable majors, Religion and Philosophy, and to avoid the reality facing him he turned to Card Game Heroes. It consumed more of his time than studying or coursework did, and he suffered for it. His grades dropped, and professors that once encouraged him to pursue graduate school, one of his only options come graduation day, simply ceased to care about a student they could see had given up. Nearly all he had left now was the game, and so he threw himself at it. He collected cards, and took pride in finding combinations of cards which worked effectively together to enhance each others strength. He regarded those that worked using the themes already suggested by the cards as playing a less intellectual game, sheep following the herd.

Deck:
Svante's deck is based off of synergistic pairing of creatures and spells. All of his cards are designed to draw power or complement another card, either explicitly gaining positive effects from another card being played or else implicitly pairing unusually well. This also makes his deck fairly spotty, however, and if the hand of cards does not contain any of his pairings he can be at a loss for what to do.

What do you think?

What do you think?
Acceptable, but be warned: If I pick Svante, I'm likely to give you synergistic cards that don't really pair up, like a goblin warlord that boosts goblins, but not give you other goblins. (Of course, you having a goblin warlord might influence encounter creation.)
