It is a trying time for the Rebel Alliance. Few worlds have the strength and tenacity to resist the might of the Galactic Empire. And with the DEATH STAR nearing completion, soon the last vestiges of the old world will be hunted down and destroyed.
But all that's above your pay grade.
Three weeks ago, each of you were transferred to the Dependable, a
Guardian-class Light Cruiser under the command of Commander Tells. None of you admitted to knowing the Commander personally, or each other, and the standard officer's record checking available prior to your transfers revealed no particular reason for the bringing together of this particular crew.
Suspicious as it was to have a bridge crew drawn from a pool of officers not known to the commander personally, even more suspicious was his behavior: contrary to regulations he assigned no first or second in command, and immediately upon leaving the still-under-construction Death Star ordered the ship to a region of interstellar space near the Outer Rim. Within hours of entering hyperspace the Imperial transponder mysteriously "broke" and the engineer has not been able to fix it.
That was three weeks ago.
After five days in hyperspace, and an uneventful arrival in apparently empty space, today is day 16 of what might generously be called a "patrol." For 16 days the Commander has relentlessly insisted that the ship remain in a empty region of interstellar space, asking that the location coordinates be reconfirmed at least two or three times a day. Reluctant to answer questions, he explains only that you're on a "secret mission" of great importance. Too important to reveal to his officers.
As the weeks roll on, with the only change being the ever-increasing nervousness of Commander Tells, some of you have begun to suspect both him and the mission. Why has the engineer not been able to fix the transponder? Why are you waiting in in the middle of empty space? Why is the Commander becoming increasingly anxious? Is he secretly selling stolen Imperial goods to pirates? Is he...a Rebel collaborator? If he is, then which among you are co-conspirators, brought aboard to assist with the treachery? Which among you are loyal officers of the Empire, merely caught up in circumstance? And if the Commander is brought to justice, will any of you be spared?
One day, like any other, as the several of you sit around at your stations hoping for something to happen, a live transmission comes in over the Holonet. It's Lord Vader, second in command to the Emperor. From his tone it is clear that he is not pleased.
"Commander Tells.""Lord Vader, I wasn't expecting-"Clearly, Commander, but your expectations do not concern me. Would you care to explain yourself?""My Lord, I submitted a report to Command with the informant's data. I made my intentions perfectly clear. It's possible that he-""It's possible that you're a traitor.""My, Lord, if you'll-"Vader raises a hand. The Captain clutches at his throat.
"No, I have already wasted too much of my time on you, Commander."A few short choking noises, the sound of a body hitting the deck, and then silence as the transmission ends. The several of you look around. You have no mission of record, no captain, and none of you are entirely certain who is the next in the chain of command.
