Plum pits
« on: April 16, 2015, 04:37:30 am »

My food stockpile is loaded with plum pits and they don't seem to be available for planting since they are trees. Is there a use for plum pits? Why are dwarves saving them?

They are useless until tree planting is in, you can't eat them or press them for oil. You want to turn them off in the food stockpile under seeds.

Have fun having every single dwarf carrying a single plum pit, then.

Pits are best dumped via dfhack autodump. I see dwarves carrying about two full sets of armor, but a single plum pit ? Why ?

must be the bags.

I am a little confused by this.  In my fort, all of the pits of each type (hundreds of each) seem to be placed in a single bag, and then all the seed bags in a single barrel.  Is there a cost to the fortress (FPS or something like that) to just leave them there?  If you wanted to dump them badly, couldn't you just dump the bag containing them along with them using one dwarf, or will that not work?

I prefer not to use cheap hack tools used for cheating in df. I just use DT. I had quite a few idlers anyway.

I'm pretty sure Toady changed the hauling code so they'll pick up multiple objects now.

Yup, but they STILL carry one pit at a time.

that only for plant gathering. With the new fruit i don't even bother with farms anymore i just designate three or so max size fruit picking zones and forget about food.

If I might self-promote,

The Modest Mod is a collection of bugfixes and minor tweaks, intended to provide a play experience as close to vanilla DF as possible - just a little bit more functional. "French vanilla," if you will.

One of these tweaks is that tree seeds which have no use - including plum pits, cherry pits, apple seeds, and so on - disintegrate into nothing almost immediately upon being produced.

There are tree seeds that are useful, though.  Rambutan (tropical) trees have brewable fruit that yields a cookable seed.  They still cook them one at a time... but its at least something? Can't think of any other trees that yield usable seeds.  Olives have the whole fruit pressed, not just the pit.

Tree seeds that are useful do not disintegrate :)

I can vouch for this!
