Actually, offering our birthday might be the best course of action. Clearly the bronze tower is already their own state, even using the political standing of their own members as chips. Very openly admitting to it, even. If there is magic to be gleamed by these birthday rituals, we would be hard pressed to find any other faction who could take as much advantage of it.

So.. what? Unless something gets actually taken from us through such a ritual, for which we should ask, I don't see the downside. We get access to the tower, can get our magic thing on, and all that rather speedy too. Sure enough, if something is lost during these ritual, we can wait. Which is to say;

Ask good Alivar what exactly happens during such a ritual.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Remember I asked that we at least partially sell our birthday. That means we at least get admitted and get a few coins. Regardless of what we can do with our birthday, it's still apparently very valuable to them. Giving it to them for practically nothing in return just because we can't use it ourselves is just stupid. Again, we shouldn't sell the key to immortality for a freaking scolarship (which we can get just by being patient enough) just because we can't unlock the gate ourselves.

EDIT: Also, I think we should begin harbouring vengeful thoughts towards our soon-to-be teacher. It's because of her that our friend was forced to kill an innocent man and it was because of her that our two companions and ourselves were nearly forced to throw ourselves onto the spear of 50 armed bandits. Sure it was to test if we were worthy enough but it nearly got innocent people hurt and one guy was even killed.

All fanfics are heresy, each and every one, especially the shipping ones. Those are by far the worst.

Ask good Alivar what exactly happens during such a ritual.

"Well, that largely depends on the magic being attempted in question, but the methods are mostly the same as the casting of such a spell or enchantment would be otherwise. At the worst it might cause you temporary exhaustion, but it requires only your presence and consent if you are not one of the active participants in the spell or ritual. "

Clarify that we want to know the level of thing they'll get out of the ritual. Immortality is worth a lot more than immediate entry into a school, after all.

"That's hard to quantify, it makes magic both more powerful and easier to accomplish. Put the power and skill of the caster or casters is still a very important factor. This is actually a topic for academic study and debate right now, but if say... a mage is capable of evaporating a gallon of water this technique might be used for that mage to evaporate five with roughly equal ease.""

Jehundik Vanyik
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After you ask a few brief questions you ultimately agree to pledge your eighteenth birthday in exchange for expedited processing of your application. Alivar seems pleased by that, and shakes your hand before jotting down what would seem to be a much more brief summary of everything he's made note of during the interview. "If i may be so bold, i am nigh certain that your application will be processed, reviewed and accepted within the week. You are free to make any final arrangements or liquidations you so choose, and make goodbyes to your former companions if you like. You may arrange for lodging at an inn either here at By-Tower or at Ravok's Roost, though if you find yourself short in funds to spend on accommodations it can be arranged for you to stay with the By-Tower servants until your application is processed and you are provided a room within the first floor of the tower. As long as you are either in By-Tower or Ravok's Roost you will be sent for once the final arrangements have been made."

At that he gently shoos you out of the office, and you are left in the brisk night air, the same servant from earlier stepping forward to see if you have need of anything.

Ask to be led to the By-Tower so we know where our room is then go hang out with our companions.

Our old companions - the ones who've been with us for several weeks by now on our journey here and who we'll likely never see again.

I'd say we just stay the night here, and unless something noteworthy happens, inform our companions about the matter. Maybe even stay tomorrow in By-Tower to get a feel for the community, albeit I think we will have ample time for that in the weeks and months to come.

Since we are already in the process of passing, we can also think about selling the book to the bard. He will be in town for multiple weeks anyways, so that matter can wait until we are an apprentice / have access to whatever magic they will let us access. At least more than basic cantrips... or so I hope  :P

Oh, right. Equip the armband.
At least for our sleep, I would think it prudent to have it on. Not sure if ward or curse work continiously or whatever, or someone of us even wants to take it of at daytime, but I hope we can agree on this point. ;3

I think we should give the book to Veila instead. She can learn the cantrips within the book and then sell it to a merchant or the bard. If I remember correctly, the bard showed interest in further travelling so they could probably do so together. Besides, Veila doesn't have a lot of money and the bard can just buy one from what's practically a centre of magic.
