Loose clumps of dead —now frozen— vegetation trail behind you, escaping from the soles of your boots. Looking up to the indistinct peaks of the mountains, one would see the sun glaring back. And though the white-grey, rugged snow covering face of the mountain threw off light, it seemed greedy and malicious winds stole the heat from the air long before it would ever find you.

The recessed jungle floor so generously advertised as 'a tried, true, and cheap highway through the Thickets', and the subsequent swift (and unbelievable) transition to mountainous crags and cutting winds means that only the foolhardy or desperate take this particular path into the infamous guarded lands of Falsehaven. The relatively small and unimpressive outpost seated at the gaping maw of the Northern Pass was a welcome sight to anyone who trudged up the mountain paths. For most travelers, this outpost was the first legitimate rest stop since they first entered the edge of the Thickets; a journey that takes no less than 5 days... if you're well prepared and very lucky. After the wave of relief passes, though, the cold stares and deadened expressions of those stuck here remind you that solace and respite are still far away.

Every few days, foreigners trickle into this place. Typically, they are in small groups led by hardy mountain natives willing to lead errant valley folk. For a king's ransom, of course. Sometimes, very rarely, adventurers are both willing to brave the crags and capable enough to survive them. In either case, this outpost is one of the few land based entrances into Falsehaven. As such, any manner of folk end up here. Sometimes permanently.

A small group of travelers are shepherded to the centre of the outpost, where a coven of several hardy buildings huddle together. Two stone spires, one half destroyed, stand watch above the outpost, as firmly fixed and intimidating as the intensely frigid expressions of the people who live here. Accommodations are spartan, to say the least. For travelers, temporary dwelling can be found at the main hall. Upon entering the hall most travellers either peg the place as a meagre, but somewhat cozy inn, or a squalid warehouse turned into a shelter. Either way, the prices are exorbitant.

Luckily, each of you has been payed for by a mutual benefactor. That is, up to a certain date. The caravan you were meant to meet has not arrived yet, but is expected soon.

For now, each of you are idling in the general area. If not in the main hall, perhaps in the small clave hosted by the lone Aeon Priest meant to provide spiritual advice and technological knowledge to the locals. For the impatient, the depot is where your caravan is to arrive. Of course, there are several other buildings meant to cater to the guards and various auxiliary personnel maintaining the outpost. Or perhaps you are just now arriving with the most recent group.

In any case, none of you have been here especially long. A week at most. You might have a loose idea who the others are... but the message you received said nothing about other promissory devotees.

((Hey! It's started.))

A man with fancy looking mechanical gauntlets.......and strangely green-tinted skin sits alone at a table. He carries a large, travel-worn backpack, and ditto clothes. He looks across at the people, comes over, and speaks. His voice sounds rusty from disuse.

"Hello. I haven't spoken to you yet, but how and why did you come here? It's all right if you don't want to let me know. He asks.

Ailana had found herself a dark corner to hide in, staying as far from people as she could until they left. She shivered as she thought of what this journey might bring. She realized she was getting remarkably hungry and went looking for food.

The book can crush skulls, and the coffin grows ever stronger and now that is has a few dead dragons in it, it sends people flying a mile backwards to explode in a pile of gore. Gore which I then place into the coffin,

Having always been a traveling merchant, the trip was not all to exhausting to Johnathan. He was fatigued, sure, but it was a familiar feeling to him. One he knew he could handle and push through. His group had hit a small bump in the road and had lagged behind the others when one of their wagon wheels broke. Fortunately it was easily remedied with a spare and they continued the journey only to just arrive. When he arrived he headed immediately to the main hall, intending to rest his body for a bit. Once he arrived, he took a look around and looked for the nearest official looking person he could and flagged them down. "Hi! My name is Trenton Mercator, I was told there would be space available to me?" He asked as he took a look around the area. At least the floor wasn't under constant motion.

Ailana froze as she realized someone noticed her, then she heard his comment. "A favour." She mumbled to herself. She turned to the man wondering who else had a bad enough life to come here. "What favour is worth coming here?"

The Outpost
Trenton

It can't be said with confidence that anyone looked official. Most guards wore dented armour (or worn leather, if no proper attire was available), and brandished battle worn weapons. Though some have the same small symbol on their person in some form, you can more quickly tell the garrison from the guests by their stiff, heavy movements, the same used by your escort. A nameless man points you in the direction of the largest building. "You'll stay there." Then to the other imposing building, "The depot..." Finally, to a smaller, but distinct light grey structure. "Forwiks clave. He's our priest." You get much the same from any other passerby.


The Hall

The 'inn' (for lack of a better term) had an open feeling to it. A building that was refurnished, altered from its original utilitarian purpose. Dusty crates and stacked logs sit nestled in the dark corners of the hall, where the warm but waning flames of the hearth held no power. Pits in the stone floor indicated that it once held the roots of several long tables, perhaps in a decorative pattern. Though the hollow, jealous pits now only serve to catch clumsy feet. Even with guards at the doors and heat from the flames, the warmth and security most would hope to find here seems distant. Or perhaps just an illusion.

Besides the five (?) devotees who have found there way here, several vagrants pepper the remaining longtables of the hall. Huddled over meagre rations, or idling before the fire pit, none seem particularly active, and all sit far apart from one another. Most are human, or appear to be, and all seem to be brooding over the next leg of their journey. Some, you might suspect, wallow in the fact that this is their new home. Over the course of your stay here, you would have picked up the fact that many of the guards and staff here at this outpost are here for one of two reasons: exile from their home or payment via indentured servitude. The outpost itself is maintained by a conglomerate of trading guilds and caravan companies, with token support from the Tersiac League in Falsehaven. Though all that information is largely irrelevant to the damned souls who serve here, who simply refer to their superiors as 'the Guildmen'.

Those seeking food would find a forlorn abhuman sitting awkwardly next to the door opposite the entrance, far to the back of the main hall. They call him the door beast, though he seems largely harmless, and never malicious. The stool assigned to him was far too small for his strange anatomy. His long arms were always bent back, palms flat on the floor, while his legs rested in front of him, unbent. He seemed to be completely torpid, like a gargoyle, up until you spoke to him directly.

"You have a meal now? Okay, no more until later," he would always say in his blubbery voice. That is, unless you already had one of your two daily allotted meals. In that case, he would say, "No more now, wait for later." Others have muttered of the arbitrary nature of his toll, but careful measure of time would show the Door Beast was always exactly right.

Johnathan's eyes followed the man's directions as the buildings were pointed out to him. Nodding towards the man he smiled and thanked him before moving off towards what he assumed was the inn. It wasn't until he was just about to enter when a thought suddenly occurred to him. He was very over dressed compared to the average person here. He always strived to dress better than any man standing next to him. However here, in this town seemingly devoid of any kind of vibrant color, it made him stick out like a sore thumb. Not in a good way mind you, in a way that made him feel like he was drawing negative attention to himself. He shook his head to clear his thoughts for a moment. "I certainly don't look that presentable." He said to himself as he took a good look. He was wearing his business casual clothing, but there were signs of wear and grime. More than likely he was just letting his nerves about meeting this unknown caravan trader get to him.

Once more resolved in his task he entered the Inn and stood just inside the entrance. His stance said to anyone who looked up at him that he knew exactly what he was doing. However inside his mind, as he gazed around the area, he had no idea what to look for. He could certainly pick out a people wearing clothing that would mark them as travelers, but he did not see anyone who looked like they ran a caravan. Of course, he couldn't let on that he had no idea what he was doing. So he decided to improvise. "Ahem, pardon my tardiness. We had a wheel break down on us and had to repair it." Pausing a moment, he gave another look around the room, hoping to see some kind of recognition on someones face to let him know who he needed to talk to. Seeing none, he continued. "If those of you with the caravan could please join me at my table, I would be very appreciative. "  With that he took a seat at the nearest empty table. On the outside he looked cool calm and collected, and perhaps most importantly he looked like a traveling merchant. Perhaps too much like the leader of a trade caravan. Unfortunately this tidbit of information was lost to him.

Niles, feeling standoffish, elects to seek his own momentary activities. First of all, an interesting experiment.

Surreptitiously scan the Door Beast. What does the Scanner tell me? Listen to its revelatory whispers.
