My mental summary of Mafia is "yelling at people simulator".

You're missing the crucial element. It's not just a "yelling at people simulator," it's a "yelling at people until they have mental breakdowns from frustration and anger and accidentally let slip some clue to their true alignment in the game, which you can twist to further incriminate them until everyone else is yelling at them too, and they get lynched, at which point second verse same as the first simulator."

It's sorta funny, because dwarf fortress is actually a incredibly easy game. It's just got a terrible UI and is really unintuitive. I mean, I really. I'm not trying to knock the game, but I really don't understand the whole "DF is super hard" thing when the only not self inflected challenge in the game is actually learning how to play (which is one of the fakest and least fun type of challenge possible.)

To be fair, yes. It is, now. Didn't used to be. Back in 2D, I remember it taking a couple weeks of play just to reliably be able to survive the first winter. But now, food grows on the surface, you can bring enough that you don't even need to plant anything in your first year, no needing to worry about floodgates or the airlock chamber to keep your farm from flooding during the mandatory irrigation process, no river that kills dwarves, no chasm antmen, no more cave-ins that drop the ceiling on your miners if you miscount by one, elephants and carp are no longer evil fell beasts of doom, squirrels re no longer master thieves, no accidentally flooding the world, no uncontrollable contagious burning clothes, adamantine is actually a thing you can use without ending the game, and I don't even remember the last time I saw a tantrum spiral.

These days, all of my forts are killed by lag.

Dwarf Fortress is a cross between Dungeon Keeper and the Sims, except all your little people are manic depressive alcoholic midgets.

A-HA! Oldfags checking in. I started in 38c and back in MY day we had to build all our own... Wait. The 40d iterations were pretty much the easiest. But, I did learn how to play 23a eventually. That was cool. I even had DF2010 figured out, but I couldn't play anymore because I didn't have time anymore.

Hahano. Dwarf Fortress isn't as hard as it's often made out to be. But I've played easier things. Hell, winning Legend of Zelda 1 is easier than getting to endgame DF, if only by a hair.

Of course, playing the game in the way that makes it easy, i.e. hiding at the first sign of danger and taking the most conservative route possible also takes out the fun.

Also what ninja!LordBucket said. A lot of the reputation comes from older versions.
