Besides, it's arguably a bug to be so specific about cloth: you never have stone moods demanding Jet or metal moods demanding Lay Pewter, or a bone mood demanding <insert specific random forgotten beast> bone.

I'm pretty sure if a dwarf goes into a mood, and they have preferences for certain materials, they can and will demand specific cloth or stone or metal. I seem to remember someone complaining that a Jeweler wanted a specific gem he liked.

Did this particular dwarf like yarn specifically OP?

I don't think dwarves can prefer thread or yarn, but they can prefer the fiber it's spun from and the cloth it's woven into.  You have DFHack.  Have you entered showmood?  That'll give you all the information on what you need.

I believe dwarves will only demand a specific metal if they have a preference for it and it's been created at least once in your fort. This can be bad if that one piece of metal was already used to make something you can't melt back into a single bar.

Far as I know, when the dwarf demands stacked cloth, it is 1/3 chance yarn, 1/3 silk, 1/3 plant. Preference not required.
