All cut gems are large gems
« on: February 01, 2015, 05:49:13 am »

I have a problem.
I wanted to build a green glass gem window and already cut 2 small green glass gems.
But after 8 9 10 11 cut green glass jobs, I got no more small gem.

What is the chance? I think I'm just wasting logs for nothing...maybe I should fire the gem cutter. ::)

Well, finally got a "cut green glass".

It's random. Large gems are made more frequently with skilled gem cutters IIRC, so yes, firing him should fix the problem.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Well, finally got a "cut green glass".

Well, if you have access to glass making, why not just make glass windows?

It's random. Large gems are made more frequently with skilled gem cutters IIRC, so yes, firing him should fix the problem.
This DFwiki page says that 5% of cut gems become large gems / crafts. 33% if you are cutting raw glass. The skill changes the value of the result, while the ratio of return stays constant.

Well I think maybe the RNG had played a joke, or it was not reseted for some reason.
The chance for 11 large gems is less than 1/2000 1/200000000000000 if 5% is correct...

In the OP you say you were cutting green glass which has a 33% chance; Still unlucky.

Does the gem cutter happen to really like large gems?  I don't know if that changes their production rate, but it seems plausible.
