I remember playing Nethack for a bit and enjoying it, but the furthest I got without explore mode was that puzzle area.

Sokoban? That's... actually pretty far in, IIRC. Past the halfway point, anyway.
It's actually really early. The stairs show up right below the oracle level, which is between DLs 5 and 9.

It is a incredibly challenging and frustrating game that I love to death and will now have to play again.

The farthest I ever got was Gehenna, but I skipped the mines and bungled Sokoban. And when I say farthest I ever got, I mean I fell through the floor after running away from a green dragon and was killed by a vampire. So progress!

My only advice is when entering a new level always have: An escape item like a scroll of teleport or a wand of digging, and never hit the arrow keys like your in another rogue-like, take your time and when you see something you're not sure of CAREFULLY move. There is absolutely no time limit for when you have to hit the move keys, take note of possible escape routes and areas that might get tricky.

I also cannot stress enough the value of always bringing a towel and eating giant eyes. It's brain food!

I would want to play again, but I can't for the life of me fathom how anyone could play with vi-keys. This wouldn't be a problem if I actually had a working computer with a frickin number pad on it!  >:(

Considering coming back to it, but gotta ask, what's the current "best" version of nethack and its very close variants?

I started playing it a couple months ago. (completely spoiled form reading a couple of LPs)

My first ascension was with a Wizard, i got lucky and found a wand of wish in a store in the third level,
got SDSM, a Ki-rin, and some markers, got magicbane a bit later, and the rest of the game was a total breeze (After the Quest, i just spammed Finger of death to anything that moved)

Since then, i ascended six times more, with Ran/Pri/Kni/Val/Mon/Bar. All of those were pretty lucky, though, finding either early wishes, or bones, or, in the priest case, getting Grayswandir sacrificen a single lichen.

I would have said SporkHack, but I just found out that's been out of developement for some time now. Quite a pity, too. It was definitely the most balanced version of NetHack I'd ever played, more than vanilla even.

Looking around, I'd probably go with UnNetHack. Now, I've never personally tried it out myself, but just seeing that it has incorporated a lot of the best things from SporkHack (without going content crazy like Slash'Em) makes me think I'd enjoy it well enough.

My best game ever--to level 14 as a wizard--was long after losing my pet. You'll probably replace it eventually anyway.

As I learned that game, a very good pet is very good for you--I got that far because I found a spellbook of Charm Monster and proceeded to brainwash everything that came my way.

Yes, they are handy if you are low on rations.   :P

I used to play a lot of Nethack before I fell in love with Dungeon Crawl and I have a few wins to my name (including the hardest roles), I was spoiled to death though. And the thing is, you really need to read the spoilers if you want to ascend because some of the important mechanics of the game are beyond obscure and instadeath is everywhere.

Once you read the spoilers though, it becomes quite hard to die in the second half of the game (after the castle) unless going for conducts game : I had an epic starvation death very late in the game when I was going wishless genoless once. All my stuff was cursed by some Lich, and the Lich race if basically the first thing you get rid of with genocide because of that behaviour. So I was floating around with my cursed ring of levitation and no scroll or holly potion left to remove the curse so I could not get to the ground and pick up corpses. I was making my way out with the amulet and died from starvation like an idiot...

Nah, near the beginning actually.  I never made it much further than sokoban myself.

It is on (around) 6-10 out of like 81.  Or 84? I forget.

81 would be the maximum amount on floor including the branches, the dungeon is about 50~55 floors deep.

sokoban is 50 deep?  no... Oh, you mean the dungeon proper without side levels, surface, or heavens and hells?  Yeah, I'd believe that.

So yeah, it is somewhere between 1/9 and 1/5 of the way through the dungeon area.  Wow, I've only seen a tiny bit of this game.
