Yeah, probably.

In any case, my biggest complaint with Nethack is that it lacks any sort of diplomacy system. It's impossible to talk to the orcs.

I've never even gotten close to beating Nethack. I gained maybe an extra two or three floors after I spoiled everything for myself. I usually make it to the mines and then die because I failed to take something into account during combat, or because I was trying to identify something by using it.

I remember wearing a (then unidentified) Ring of Conflict into Minetown. I was very confused until I died and got to identify my items.

Necroing a thread that's many moons old is a bit silly IMO.

I remember playing Nethack for a bit and enjoying it, but the furthest I got without explore mode was that puzzle area.

Sokoban? That's... actually pretty far in, IIRC. Past the halfway point, anyway.
