Apparently Obama did set up funding for a referendum which can be done at any time.

No non-political reason that I know of, no. Even their economic problems right now shouldn't be too much of a barrier to entry.

As for political reasons, uh, to spit in Obamas face, because it'll add more democratic party voters and give the dems an additional leg up, or make up some bogus reason that makes sense to republicans.

What will their political parties do once they're a state? They're each based around a different answer to the question: statehood, independence, or what-we-already-are, according to wikipedia.

I could see folks in Congress not wanting to admit them if they thought it would give the other party more votes in the senate.

Theres already people there who identify as Republican or Democrat, so, some will go under the Republican tent, others the Democrat tent, the rest probably as independents.

The fact that the Republicans alienated Hispanics is all their own fault really, so, if a Puerto Rico state goes solidly Democrat, the Republicans have themselves to blame.

They can definitely be undemocratic while still following the rules. Clearly what that means is we need to change the rules.

But it's not exactly democratic to agree to a set of rules (implicitly or explicitly) and then make major revisions.  Democracy isn't the same as majoritarian, even when the majority is justified.

Attended a neat meeting thingamabob with a bunch of candidates for various stuff in and out of my state today, very interesting.

One of the old dudes there was largely basing his platform upon "I've been around for like 25 years, please vote for me. Also REPUBLICAN AGENDA ITEMS IN A DEMOCRAT MEETING, suddenly agree with me pl0x." Very amusing, got lots of boos. :V Also a relative of mine is going to be county commissioner and I briefly talked to the governor.
