How long ago did the common core stuff start? Just wondering.

It was just being rolled out Summer 2013. I helped implement it at a local school.

I think that mental math skills can actually be taught, and that kids want to learn them instead of just relying on their calculators, but they need to be taught indirectly--through demonstration--rather than through rote drills. I'm saying this as an aspiring mathematician who helps kids learn better mental math and number sense skills.

Entirely agree. Personally, I see the value of more of an exploratory approach in mathematical education.

Yes, although I can tell you that the post-Lamarck's Lament "flipped classroom" approach is sucking hard for a lot of people and allowing people who know almost no math to "teach math" and say that the kids are "exploring."

When the math teachers do not have this deeper, more intrinsic understanding of the subject matter, they cannot even determine if one of their students exhibits this competency-- let alone teach it.

EG, understanding the WHY of the equation instead of the WHAT, is not something that somebody lacking can convey to another. The educational system, like so many other systems that must serve all, and serve all equally, must by necessity provide what can be delivered equally and consistently. (Information can be conveyed, understanding cannot.)

It does this very well. It delivers a sub-optimal education, equally, and consistently.

I agree with all the manlove for vets (I get to see firsthand the shitty VA service due to my half-brother's travails), but here's the problem -- what do you do for a guy that's spent 4-8 years straight out of high school being trained primarily to be a killboy, with very little technical skills adaptable to civilian life? Where do you employ him?

What do you about guys that are so damaged by their experience that they're essentially disabled?
