Foreign direct investment is only when a company from outside the country buys a controlled subsidiary or operates a new facility in the country. I.E. Exon drills Canadian shale oil.  Unless Chinese real estate companies were renting Vancouver appartments, I dont think FDI would be where Chinese investments in Vancouver would show up.

I dont think they have a particular preference for Canada.  I wouldn't know though, all the Chinese emigrants I know are American (since I live in the US).

I was talking about the start of the immigration. There was lot of Hong Konger immigrating to Vancouver from late 80's to the Handover in 1997. I'd agree. There are several other countries with larger Chinese migrant populations (Malaysia and Thailand being the big two, along with Myanmar, Indonesia, and the US.) Even Peru has roughly the same number of Chinese as Canada. I think it may just be more noticeable in Canada because they have a relatively low population to begin with.

So the real question is -- why aren't Canadians fucking more? I mean, it's cold -- you'd think that would be an inducement to fucking by itself.

See this is one of the reasons I still follow some political news, even though I feel like my vote matters less and less every second. It's reached Alice in Wonderland levels of surreality and craziness. Donald Trump for President? State reps publicly saying that religious authorities are the Antichrist?

Is this the real life? Or is this fantasy?

I liked Kasich, but he's beginning to pander to the Right (signing a bill this weekend to kill Planned Parenthood funding in Ohio, for instance)

Kasich isn't pandering to the Right, he's just good at faking moderate. He's been on the abortion-restriction train since 2011, and really turned it up in 2013 while doing his damnedest to appear un-involved. It's one of the reasons I really don't like the guy. Sunday's bill was par for the course. Kasich is craftier than he looks.

Suppose there is a one in a million chance that your vote would swing the election.  That is hundreds of millions or even billions of lives you are effecting in a drastic way.  Sure it's only a one in a million chance but a one in a million chance of something that important is very important.

And what's even better is that the argument doesn't get undermined by everyone taking the advice to heart.  If everyone starts acting like their vote matters and voter participation rates rise, we get a more reasonable electorate.  There is even an emergent property where a firebreathing bigot might do well if only half the eligible voters vote because all the moderates stayed home but have no chance if everyone takes democracy seriously.

So dont worry, your vote is very important!

She said (also seems to imply that the founders of the US are) the Protestant Church thinks the pope is the anti-christ. If anyone is aware of the Scottish sketch show "Chewin' the Fat", there is a particular sketch for when people point out the obvious, though it is rather offensive. I'd really like the reporter to have done that though. There's even a sketch in which they do it about God! /not really relevant

Referencing a Protestant view on the Catholics is like asking a KKK member about Martin Luther King.
