Woohoo, protest vote year, I think. Anyone heard anything about any third party options?

Larry Lessig? Sure he's running with the democrats, but he's been effectively shunned like a third party candidate.

I haven't heard anything on his views of guns (which I know is a big issue for you), but as protest votes go, he works. Wikipedia would list the third party candidates, so, that's one place to look.

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson is running for the Libertarian nomination (he was their nominee in 2012). along with six other declared candidates.

Candidates include:

  • Joy Whitmire, a self-proclaimed "spiritual visionary" who claims God cured her Hepatitis C and other ailments.
  • Derrick Michael Reid, a lawyer and engineer who "admits that his ability to write and otherwise communicate in English is limited, calling mathematics his first language" and who for some reason had his campaign photo made with him wearing what appears to be a Union Army general's uniform.
  • Cecil Ince, an "actor and business owner" who has an entry with zero details on IMDb.

See the whole carnival at http://2016.libertarian-party.org/

For the Greens, you have Jill Stein and possibly Cynthia McKinney.
The Constitution Party has 3-4 people running for their nomination, but I will personally bitchslap you if you even think of voting for those theocrats.
And then there's a slew of crackpot independent candidates with less than zero percent chance of winning.

And of course, there's always the chance that Trump loses the GOP nomination, declares that he was treated unfairly, publicly tears up his pledge and then runs 3rd party. And precisely no one would be surprised.

The problem with 3rd parties seems to be not that they don't have good ideas, but rather that they don't have good candidates. Johnson has been a rare spot of sanity among the usual fringe candidates.

No the problem with 3rd party candidates is that they actively shun good ideas.  I would gladly vote for a libertarian candidate who wanted to take a machete to the shitshow of regulation that we see in things like zoning and occupational licencing laws.  But they aren't actually interested in ideas that would improve the government according to their political stance so no such libertarian candidate exists.

The democratic party is effectively treating Lessig like a third party candidate though.

Also the spoiler effect. The only viable way to be a third party candidate is to attach yourself to one of the major two parties and try and influence them, Like the tea party did.

Yeah, I think Johnson's tagline in 2012 was "Throw away your vote on me." I thought he wasn't going to run again, but guess not.
Actually, he may not be. There's a lot of conflicting information out there. He's doing one of those "I haven't decided, but I might have no other choice than to run" things where ya back into the process. Cause honestly, who WANTS to be President in this day and age?

You could go with Zoltan Istvan, the 2016 Transhumanist Party candidate. President Zoltan sounds pretty badass, like the villain in an 80's kids' cartoon. Plus, how many other candidates have "conquering death and achieving immortality" as one of their platform planks?

Trump. He's going to buy out Death's shares and then run Life & Death into bankruptcy.

Having visited his website and Twitter feed, I can confirm his statement.

His comments section is populated entirely by himself, posting links to pages within his own website, which don't actually exist.  ???

Yeah but he got that by agreeing to 1 trillion years for The Donald and 79 years for the rest of us.

because this is the de facto general us thread because we don't actually have one for some reason I'm going to put this here.
http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2015/10/28/452540839/children-get-married-in-the-u-s-too-15girls

something interesting that's in the comments is laws, even old useless outdated ones, almost never get repealed. it makes me think we need a Justinian style compiled law codification condensing hundreds of years of legal cases and laws into a single source striping out outdated overruled and stupid laws and decisions.
