"Alt-right" used to refer specifically to the internet-based neoreactionary movement, but nowadays it's mostly a shorthand for the critters who thrive in the dampest and darkest places of the web, such as /pol/, PUA/manosphere blogs, certain subreddits, etc. etc. Also known as Trump voters, or just plain pricks.

I hate to defend Trump or his base, but a lot of his current pollers aren't terrible people. Most of them are just happy to see a politician who doesn't try to hide his asshole-ness.

Presumably a cynic that believes all politicians are assholes, and as such one who's open about it must be less so because hiding your asshole nature is assholish.

Seems like some (many?) are just compartmentalizing away the assholeness since they like his no-holds-barred rhetoric and the fact that he isn't scripted and non-politically-correct.

Why? If I'm gonna be a bloodless husk either way, I'd rather get the one that looks less likely to make a mess of it. Someone will have to clean up, and going for the crazed TrumpTzu is kind of a middle finger to whoever that ends up being.

Maybe they like his policy positions?  He is extremely right wing on immigration but is the left of the republican field on taxes.  Is it hard to believe that 12 million republicans hate both mexicans and dont want tax breaks for the rich?

Lil' bit hard when it seems like basically no one supporting him actually says they appreciate his policy positions (assuming you can really figure out what the hell those are, anyway). It's all authenticity and saying it like it is and businessman (i.e. shitty politician) and whatnot.

E: Though, yeah, sure, it's a possibility. Maybe that's what's actually going on. I'd just be a little surprised to find out it were true. Actually knowing trump's policy positions is a degree of competence I don't exactly expect from our electorate... gods know I only know the most vague brushes of it.

Yeah, I'd, well.... no. I was going to say I'd respect people who said they liked his policies more than his straight talk, but someone who did like his stated policies would be an idiot.  Anyway, how can one judge his "authenticity" as it stands? He hasn't been elected yet; he's no less likely to change his policies after being elected than anyone else is according to the available evidence.

Authenticity in this case is code word for "Willing to be an overtly racist jackass." I think the normal line is something like being willing to say what he thinks instead of filtering for basic human decency. That sort of thing, not policy consistency. I'm honestly not entirely sure trump knows what his policies to be consistent about are, so y'wouldn't expect consistency towards a variable/undefined position.
