My whole problem with the "splitting Iraq into separate nations" thing is that it sure reminds me an awful lot of what started the entire mess in the Middle East in the first place: Britain and France divvying up the Ottoman Empire amongst themselves.

Whenever you take a chunk of land, decide to make it its own nation, and put a sect in power, everyone else is likely deep in the territory of "screwed" and/or "very angry", and instability and unrest following that shouldn't be too terribly surprising.

Except, what do you do if said chunk of land doesn't have an unified national identity? We can't go and put the old borders of the Ottoman empire in and then let things separate however things would have if the Ottoman empire's territory wasn't divided up between England and France.

This topic needs it's own thread though.

You hold a god-damn referendum in each area asking the populace what they want to do, you don't decide for them. That's the whole problem, regardless of whether you decide to split it up or you decide to hold it together, it's YOU deciding, not the people who it actually effects.

Whats one of those political analyst site things that compare them and their policies? I can't remember the name right now. It's not politico, at least I'm pretty sure that's not what I'm thinking of.
www.isidewith.com
I sort of liked this. I don't like how the questions are centered around the perpetuation of bourgeois power, or rather how they make no comment on who should wield power in the United States. Maybe the presidential candidates aren't interested in this question either, nor is the general public, but it is, regardless, an important question. Some of the questions sort of visit the edge of that plane, but they do not stay for long, nor do they get even a glimpse of the heart.

Here's how Hillary differed from me. I am unsurprised that she is in favour of further droning, the NSA, and increased and strengthened border patrol. Apparently I side with Bernie on 97% of issues, but here's where I disagree. I don't think the question of Israel is worth only 3% disagreement, it is rather central.

Bernie is a social democrat in the reformist sense. He is in favour of imperialism. I am a revolutionary socialist, and I oppose imperialism. We are not 97% the same. There is still a need for a candidate way to the left of Bernie, way to the socialist side of things. There is a real need for a genuine workers' party, or at the very, very least a candidate independent of the democrat party.

Infinite wrath, and infinite despair?
Which way I fly is Hell; myself am Hell;
And, in the lowest deep, a lower deep
Still threatening to devour me opens wide,
To which the Hell I suffer seems a Heaven.

Yeah exactly. The previous question was rhetorical really though.

Of course though, right now really isn't the best time, not with ISIS trying to take over all of Iraq, or maybe just the Sunni regions.

We really should make this semi-derail (semi because theres kind of more than one discussion going on here) it's own thread though.

What you advocate is known in German as 'graveyard silence': Better a continuous stream of atrocities by a stable dictator than an outburst of violence hopefully followed by a slower stream of atrocities, or none at all. Basically it's the 'Let's not make things better, we might make them worse' mentality.

Finally I have a term for that. Thanks. this comes up especially often with respect to North Korea. It's an embarassment to all of humanity that that abhorrent regime is allowed to continue, with the tacit support of the major powers. I am appalled that people still don't think it needs to be ended ASAP.

North Korea is a little different than most brutal dictatorships, since they quite possibly have functioning nuclear weapons. Seoul would be a crater if the US tried anything overt.

I think the title here reflects well enough on the gay marriage news: all the legal opposition to gay marriage really couldn't continue forever. Still, it probably could have continued for a while, and it's good it actually happened.

Also, with isidewith, I'm 90% Rand Paul, heh.
Curiously, I am 75% Bernie Sanders, despite disagreeing with him integrally on economic issues.

It always puzzles me that the US spends so much on it's military but either can't or won't develop really subtle ways to assassinate people.

Who says we haven't? Wouldn't be subtle if we are going around and telling people :P

Also considering the south koreans and the japanese have access to the same missile defense system we have, it be like tossing a cricket in a frog pit.
