Now, Boxer is actually retiring and her seat will be up for grabs in the 2016 election, but it's more accurate to say it's up for grabs in the 2016 Democratic primary. Because whoever wins that, wins the seat. Registered Dems outpace registered Repubs in the Golden State 43% to 28%, and most of the independents describe themselves as left-leaning.

Freaking finally! congressmembers should have term limits really. While it won't help with the gerrymandering in the House, it'll at least ensure some turnover in congress.

And yeah I'm one of those left leaning (or Democrat leaning) independents.

Ah, gerrymandering.

One of the many reasons I hate our fine country.

Though there is something I've always kinda been wondering; since most hard Democrats or Republicans aren't going to be voting for the other party, is it just moderates who make up swing votes? I mean, I know the overall actual change isn't usually that much when a turnover results in one party or another controlling the House/Senate, but I have to wonder if it's just a new set of kids being able to vote, or a lot of people changing their vote constantly.

I have to admit I find the disability-race hilarious. Is it going to be a 'who can round up the most sympathy' race, do ya think?

On a different note, I'm gonna be able to vote in the presidential elections and basically nothing else, I believe, due to when my birthday is, until the next cycle.

'Nother article on the Republicans' demographic problem. The article notes that if the Democratic share of the minority vote remains as high as it did in 2012, the GOP will need 63% of the white vote to win the White House in 2016. That's very nearly an all-time record high- Reagan won 66% of the white vote in 1984, and that was a landslide year that- given the country's frustration with the GOP- is very unlikely to be repeated.

3. Nevada: Where nobody in the Democratic Party seems to know who they want to run to succeed Harry Reid, while EVERYBODY in the Nevada Republican Party wants to run, including some folks that really probably shouldn't (remember "Tea Party Witch" Sharron Angle?).

I just looked her up. WTF!? How is it that this country manages to regularly turn out politicians who are more toxically crazy than Caligula!?

Heh, yeah, I remember that 'not a witch (while being dressed up as a witch)' thing, but I thought it was someone over in the New England area.

And ties to Scientology to boot? Magical.

edit

The list of businesses distancing themselves from Trump increases. The PGA has removed one of The Donald's golf courses from the Grand Slam tour. Though it was apparently more amicable than Macy's and Univision splitting with him, it's still essentially the same message. Just phrased in a way that is more in keeping with how I expect to see corporations try to distance themselves from volatile issues.

The immigration issue itself isn't quite THAT volatile, it's Trumps volatility that they are backing off from.

Trump wants to start a discussion on it, okay, sure, but you can still have a discussion without being an assmouth about it.

Yes, I just made that word up.

Well, there are a number of folks in the GOP who are convinced Harry Reid's campaign somehow funded/supported Angle in the primary in order to have a weak opponent, the same way that many in the SC Democratic Party are convinced that Jim DeMint did the same thing in 2010 with Alvin Greene.

If that sounds like just sour grapes, consider that one of DeMint's political strategists, Rod Shealy, was proven to have recruited an unemployed black fisherman with a drug record to run for Congress on the GOP ticket, just to boost white turnout which he needed to help win the Lt. Governor's race for his sister. Best part? She didn't win, and he never actually paid the fisherman the money he promised.

So yeah, shit like that happens. Although in Angle's case, she at least had a political career before running. Greene had no history whatsoever.

And I completely misfired on the "Tea Party Witch" bit -- that was Christine O'Donnell, who ran for Joe Biden's old seat. Angle was the one who made comments about Americans unhappy with Obamacare and other Federal policies using "Second Amendment remedies", which some took as dangerously close to encouraging armed rebellion and/or threats against the President.

She created a furor by coming out against abortion in the case of rape soon after securing the nomination.  This is Delaware which was one of the very last holdouts of the moderate republicans.  If she didn't personally drive the species extinct by killing off Mike Castle in the primary, she managed to bag one of the last.

As I recall the general election mostly consisted of her saying stupid crap and Chris Coons screwing a real serious look on his face and repeating "We should consider what we do carefully."  I bet more Delawareans remember her then him.

1. Wheelchair-bound Ron Kirk (R-IL) trying to hold off double-amputee Iraq War veteran Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) in what can only be called one of the most uncomfortable races in America.
A small correction:
Mark Kirk is the Senator. Ron Kirk was U.S. Trade Rep.
