Is it safe already?
« on: November 22, 2014, 09:54:10 pm »

So, i've been playing DF 40.13, since i know the changes on the thought system made the game, to some players, "virtually unplayable", because dwarfs get pissed of angry really quick and making them happy is a pain in the ass sorta hard. So, is it fixed already?

14.16 had a problem with dorfs getting high and long-lived lvls of stress, the last patch seem to have fixed it and they rarely get problematic.

You really shouldnt worry that much. Forts failing is half the fun after all and dealing with serious problems is the other half.

0.40.15 was unplayable due to emo dwarves.

0.40.16 seems fine.

at some point I was just making all my dwarves max happy whenever one of them got stressed because there was no going back. It doesn't seem to be a big issue with the most recent version, though. Dwarf Therapist is available for 40.19 but not dfhack yet.

The emotion problems have been mostly solved.

DF40.18 :

I've got 180 dwarves, where only 1 single mason keeps getting depressed.
Noone else ever got a despression, or got severly stressed out.
The one mason just gets depressed, doesn't do anything.. and reverts back to stressed.

This has been going on, since I ordered my vampire mayor to attack a forbidden beast and died horribly. (+- year 1 and in year 4, 5 now)

I can't find anything in her description about her depression/stressed state though.
I assume it's because that social vampire and she doesn't have any family/close friends at all in relations.

Otherwise I only got a slighty stressed out dwarf once in a while.

(Seems that the military wasn't too happy after massacring a goblin siege, but they all get happy by master-sparring afterwards)

I haven't had any invaders to spark a tantrum spiral but the only dwarf I've had go insane was a child that because of a glitch was dropped one tile away from a hospital bed and ignored and just sat there crying about his major injury until he lost it.

That's an old bug that's apparently still not fixed - wounded dwarfs can end up unconscious but not resting. Since they're not resting, they're not treated, but they're unconscious + wounded, so remain unconscious indefinitely and never reset their job. You can force a job reset by building a cage trap under the dwarf, then releasing them after they've been caged. Since they're unconscious, they'll be caught as soon as the trap is loaded.

On topic: dangerous unhappiness now generally takes the form of stress, and the building and removal of stress usually happens over fairly long times. It takes months to years for a dwarf to become notably stressed, and it will take months to years to stabilise them again. At least that's the process i've seen with moderate-impact (brown and yellow messages) stressors. Mood decay can probably be a good deal faster when a slew of "red" messages crops up, like deaths of sentients or getting involved in combat; but even then it should no longer be: one well-liked dwarf dies peacefully of old age -> everyone instantly flips out; 40% of the population commit suicide, 30% make legendary dwarf leather thongs of the remaining 30%.
