PTW. I want to see if I can permanently domesticate cave dragons. Checking whether the dwarf caravan has your newly trained creatures should also work, right?

...why do your hydras have two more heads than mine?
Does that mean male hydras... oh god dammit.

The only real way I can think of for sure to check would be to domesticate multiple wild members of a species that previously had no progress on the civ level(keep a wild breeding pair, domesticate most of the wild offspring, making sure to leave some wild when the breeders are nearing the end of their lifespan). Then abandon the fort and found another one elsewhere within the same civ and see if you can now embark with products/tame version of that creature.

from 34.11 I remember getting civ. level to knowledgable for a species the civ had no contact to knowledgeble in first embark. then in secound embark with same civ. that species would have general familiarity. But don't remember if that stabalized after repeated embarks with same civ or continued to drop. Wound up getting distracted with memebers from old forts that were about to collapse from various things; immigrating just to start tantruming or spamming because of soffering from some syndrome.

according to the wiki it depends in the pet value of creature, and well, if your civilization has familiarity with them. the more value the creature has, the longer it takes and its worse if your civ dont know it.

Domestication of a species wasn't possible last I checked, but after a while it should move to "expert" level, and that process can be sped up by keeping a dozen or so members of the species in cages where they will lose their training faster. I have managed to get emus to the tame level on my current fortress (by training the babies of emus I caught and de-wilded), but I haven't tried sending breeding pairs of tamed emus off with the caravans yet...

anyone posting next - please pay attention to the actual question asked, not just some of the replies.

The question as posted is more or less:
Can your taming of a new species give your home civ enough knowledge to make them a domesticated animal of your civilization

The answer I have based on my current knowledge of the game is 'no'
can't explain the mechanics, but it's just not currently possible

From what I read on toady's blog, it sounds like domestication affects the entire civilization. Since the world is simulated now, what if you trade a breeding pair to the dwarf caravan? Would that pair end up in another fortress and then make babies?
It'd be amazing if we could sell a breeding pair of domesticated unicorns to a dwarven civ, so that their animal trainers could begin breeding and training them further.

It'd only make sense, right? I doubt that even the dumbest of monarchs would waste the chance to have their own war unicorns!

unicorns won't breed because they don't have the right tags.

Forget war unicorns, unicorn steaks are the wave of the future.

I thought they did breed, but they unable to be tamed.  With the exception of the elf traders obviously.

they used to, but do not, and elf traders shouldn't bring them either. They have neither the pet or pet_exotic tags, which are required to breed. Badger Storm was running a unicorn far recently, and had to modify the raws for them to breed.

The general idea still applies, though.

Wouldn't every civ want their fair share of riding rutherers??

Apart from the minor issue that dorfs cannot get themselves to sit on an animal that isn't dead. The dwarven way is probably war minecarts.

The proper dwarven war minecart propulsion would be a magma driven steam engine.

However, I think I've derailed the thread...
