How long does domestication usually take?
« on: November 22, 2014, 11:48:34 am »

In legends mode, there's some occurrences where Urist Mctrainer goes into the deeps of the world and domesticates/trains a random animal, such as giant olms and mole dogs.

But in my fortress, I have been training crundles non-stop and still have that general familiarity that I started with.

How many trainings does a species have to go through without being bred to count as domesticated for the entire civ? And when one IS domesticated, would I be able to buy it on embark?

I'm not sure it's possible to domesticate a species by training it, unfortunately.

"http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Animal_trainer" is very helpful...

...once I had a giant Olm leather production with 30 breeding Olms. I think it took 2-3 years to get to expert training.Since crundles are less valuable, training levels should raise faster.

The question is about full domestication of a species, on the civilization level, which as far as I know isn't possible.

I'm not sure about civ-level, but all it takes to tame a species is to have well-trained parents and then continue training the young into adulthood. Took me just a single generation after the captured pair to get a tame polar bear. Though it probably won't work like that with anything that doesn't have child tags since there's they're "adults" immediately after birth.

Right but the point is for the actual civilization to have mastery over training the animal. Can that be raised above basic?

Well the world-activation is still fairly new, so the answer to that is a solid "maybe". At least until we can get some confirmation of the event and if we're lucky a set of instructions to make it happen again. In other words: Time for some ☼SCIENCE☼!

Well if you are able to domesticate a species I would recommend retiring then embarking somewhere with the same Civ and see if you can start with that species. Then we'll know if the knowledge of raising those animals actually is passed on.

I don't think you can tame a creature so much that it becomes available on embark, but if you like you could probably do a little quick modding to simulate it.  It's a feature I'd love to see, but it would have to be limited to certain animals or else it would be ridiculously OP.

From what I recall, training of creatures in your fort does not currently affect the civilizations level of familiarity with the animal. As world events now continue to be simulated outside of your fort, it is possible that the train/domesticate events can occur outside while your fort is running.

Possibly by creating a fort full of highly trained animal trainers then abandoning it and setting up another would allow them to go out and domesticate more creatures.

1 Generation. You can only domesticate them when they are 'children' and you will never have them domesticated outside of that fort, unless you do it phyically.

You misread the question. It is not about how many taming are needed to produce a tame animal in fortress mode, it is about how many are needed to change the civilization level taming status for that species as a whole.

From what I read on toady's blog, it sounds like domestication affects the entire civilization. Since the world is simulated now, what if you trade a breeding pair to the dwarf caravan? Would that pair end up in another fortress and then make babies?

as far as I know, based on the messages the game has given me, you can in fact teach your civ through your training of animals the basics of training whatever unusual species you are domesticating. I have never seen anything beyond basic though.

This is generally what i do most. But it's been a long time since i've massively trained any particular creature for extended periods of time, GCS's were to be my next project if i could collect a massive collection of them (i'm talking having around 90+ of them).
I can confirm you can easily reach expert, but domesticated? can't remember off hand. I "seem" to remember getting wild ravens to become tame (not bred ones, but the actual wild forms, but this was with a fortress with about 200 of them, i gave the save file to someone else and they just said "what's the fascination with ravens man?!? you're freaking nuts" proceeded to butcher them all (which must have taken some time!) and gave the save back)

So i cannot confirm about domestication either way, i have reached expert in multiple occasions, but i don't believe that does the job, a legendary tamer with expert "may" be enough if done enough to a single creature, as i said, i "think" i remember taming some, but i can't guarentee anything.
This can be done with any animal whom can be trained.

I will do research, although this is likely to take a while, especially seeing i'm currently against massive hordes of undead/necromancers whom i've never really faced before and having quite a lot of "fun" and thinking about dropping them down a massive hole at the moment. But i don't like not knowing the answer to that question :P

I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.
