Fire rate is based on operator skill; it was slow because you never used it.
You also need to reload it. And it requires a reasonable safe distance.
I still prefer a squad of marksdwarves.

Just for curiosity's sake.  Can I mod a crossbow to shoot ballista arrows?  The actual arrows, as opposed to a new ammo.

firing speed isn't the issue... completely random aiming is the issue.  And setting up narrow long hallways doesn't really help the aiming issue at all, unfortunately.

Yes! caught a GCS. Still no signs of goblins 5 years in though. Even as I embarked very close to a goblin civ. This thing with sieges (or lack thereof) in DF 2014 is starting to become a non-starter.

Maybe we should suggest a 'random start' option, where, like arena, you pick raws and conditions (in this case, starting conditions and embark params) and can relieve the glory days of time-lapsing goblins.

You need a siege workshop to build those right?

the ballista arrows themselves are built at a forge, I believe. The metal parts anyway.

Arrowheads at a forge, yes, but assembled into useable ammo from a log and said forged arrowhead at a siege workshop.

Before the ballista arrows got their cutting edge technology back those were fairly devastating against goblins - given that they hit. My siege operators were top notch quality, but not yet legendary.

I had to assemble my battery this way in order to catch broad shots and reuse arrows, but still I lost about 50% as those hit the wall before first fortification!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Getting a hit like this (= straightly forward flying arrow) reguired 11 arrows to be fired
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And hit did quite a lot of damage. It was nice to see those beggars can actually *block* ballista arrows with shields...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Minor casualty was a child of one siege operator, who ran in front of a siege weapon when it was fired and was jammed into the fortification, leg crushed and bleeding.

if I ever get sieged in DF 2014 Im tring something a similar design with webs to slow down goblins for a chance to get a few shots in but 3 forts in I still havent had a fort that get goblin sieges.

How good are they vs. HFS? I've tried before, but had problems with them escaping out of the minecart railgun machinery.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

Is it possible to build the ballista and it's ammo entirely made of wood.

I wonder if ballista ammo is as good when fired from a minecart shotgun.

Could make a semi-auto minecart railgun that fires blasts of ballista ammo to make up for the inaccuracy and slow fire rates of the standard ballista. If you shoot enough dakka at once something's bound to hit, right?
