They were never bad?  Only bugged to inaccuracy, irrc.  Never much had a use for them, but I kept a few around in my more creative forts.

Their damage potential when metal tipped has never been in doubt. The challenge is getting them to hit anything, which is erratic at best even with a killzone featuring overlapping fields of fire, skilled operators and high quality components.

A legendary operator will only ever shoot straight. They're quite dangerous.

So now you can create massive artillery kill-zones? Nice!

They were bugged in that they were blunt weapons. Wood and Adamantine ballista arrows were terrible. This is fixed, so they will now act as edged weapons and cut things.

Could also make use of the gui/siege-engine if you use dfhack, I pulped a few goblin sieges with catapult towers like that when I first discovered it, was a lot of fun actually, didn't do as many ballistas though, only time I really did was for a kill tunnel in a community fort which worked well enough in that any misfire to either side was probably still going to hit a gob due to the overlapping field of fire I set up.

And cut things they do! I have only tested a few shots yet but limbs have been severed Every shot! Next: Armored test subjects.I have nog sieges or ambushes for some teason so I have to use my own military. At least my doctors will get alot of training.

My brain gave me an image of a goblin dressed like santa for goblinmas, menacing a dorf with spikes of egg-nog... but then everything broke down when I figured out what teason meant.

Whoa! Full copper armour. (breastplate, mail shirt, greaves, gauntlets, highboots, helmet a cloak and trousers) Has no protection at all on a copper ballista arrow. Limbs are severed everywhere! sometimes multiple severed limbs. These things can take an arm AND a leg!

However my recruits have no or very little armor training. Still somewhat intresting and hughly amusing. Making steel armour now and I intend to sacrifice a couple of trained dwarfs.

This is quite fun. A steelclad hammerlord will handle ballista arrows quirte well. Not only will he often dodge or bat the ballista arrow out of the air, The steel armor seems to deflect copper ballista arrows.

A decently trained (lvl 5-10 in everthing) whipdwarf fully clad in Iron however is being slaughrered. A copper ballista arrow easily cuts hands through iron gauntlets.
As i said I dont get goblin visits but it looks like even copper ballista arrows should cut goblins to pieces. A combination of ballistas and webs shoud give me a decent chanse of hitting goblins but have neither GCS nor goblins...

I never used that in real battle due to its low fire rate.

Fire rate is based on operator skill; it was slow because you never used it.
