Overall, it's better for multiplayer because the intrigue starts immediately, but it's worse for singleplayer if you enjoy that.

I've enjoyed it in single player.  Less of an obvious win, but going full tech versus the AI does end in the same predictable way.  Random universe takes away the massive starting stockpiles and extra planets.

Lots of stuff costs gems, so they tend to be the real limiting factor.

It's with me. Will try to get my turn in tonight.

EDIT: Turn sent.

Also, ye gods these rebels!! It's not a happy day when you see a mixed batch of Xyll Warbeasts and Cybertroopers pop up out of nowhere and obliterate your garrison.

Faithful of the galaxy, rejoice! The Prophet's own Signet Ring, long thought to be lost, has been rediscovered on Aragon, by a young scion of the Hazat leading a raid against a den of pirates. Surely this is an auspicious omen for the future of the greatest of Houses.
The ring shall be now be housed in the Aragon Planetary Cathedral, though plans are being made for a voyage so that the young Lord may present it to the Patriarch himself.

Anyone know how the mod handles artifacts? In vanilla you have to research a tech, and usually less critically control the church on the planet, but in Emperor Wars the Church owns all the churches. Obviously, warring with them to receive the benefit of "Church diplomacy bonus" isn't really ideal :P.

Yeah, no idea if you still need Theurgy (is Theurgy even still *in* the game?) and/or Church control.

The requirement to have chemicals to build even basic guns like artillery and anti-tank is a bee-atch. I'm getting steamrolled by beefy rebels on Midian, and I can't really build anything but conscripted levies at the moment.

Aren't you supposed to be able to hire mercenaries? How does that work?

Don't forget that there's an agora on every planet now, so you can buy the chemicals from the league if you need them.

Mercenaries require Economics or Macro-Economics, depending on which one you want to recruit. Basically, Economics is such a keystone technology that it really should just be unlocked from the start or spread out among multiple techs or something.

Aren't you supposed to be able to hire mercenaries? How does that work?

It's similar to hiring Vau Mercenaries from spaceports in Nova where (for the most part) there are few initial resource requirements like 1 gem or 10 electronics but the maintenance costs are high. Which is supposed to be offset by creating negative maintenance units like serfs, freemen, weaponsmiths, etc. which "produce" money for you as long as you own them.

I played around some on one-player and you can hire a dizzying array of units from all sorts of different cities including from the planetary shield of all things.

I am now imagining wars turning into not trying to capture cities and planets but attacking civilian units and kidnapping them on bulk haulers.

"We demand that the Ambassador from the defeated party shall pay in tribute to us: 2 Bankers, 15 Serfs and 11 monopols for peace."

Apparently if i read the developer correctly that is due to planetary shields being the centre of large cities and that slums would naturally gather around them. That is why most criminal units can be hired there.

Haven't seen any Symbiot incursions in my neck of the woods.

======================================================================
"Welkommen gentlemen, to my modest abode," gestured the rather plump Nobleman to the group that assembled before him.

Having provided that absolute barest of civility, he returned to devouring the sumptuous banquet laid out for his enjoyment alone. In between bites of poached emerald eggs and jade ham slices he garbled out, "I trusht yursh eshpedshin was a sushesh?"

The Expedition Captain enthusiastically nodded, "Yes milord, the rebels were completely routed and the ruins they inhabited leveled to the ground. But the real success was when we cleared out their leader's lair and discovered a wondrous artifact!"

The Governor of Ravenna hastily gulped and sputtered out, "Well out with it! Is it Second Republic Tech? Or perhaps a relic of the Prophet Zebulon?"

"Even better milord! We have found the Mirror of Forgiveness! It's said to possess the ability of making the other Great Houses like you!"

The rotund Ruler of millions burped his incredulity and seized the mirror to gaze into its depths, "Bah! this petty trinket would only work against the most dull or poorly programmed into actually liking...hmm, by the Pancreator my chins do look magnificent today..."
