War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.

Oh, yeah, I forgot that one, saw it already, it was a great movie too. Apparently Leviathan is brilliant though, albeit a tad depressing. I've heard it's has not been cleared for screenings in Russia (though funded by the Ministry of Culture, go figure).

Speaking about Soviet classic:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070861/ - Film about WW2 fighter pilots.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073488/ - And this one's about infantry. Lots of actual veterans in the cast, too.

Concerning recent films, I can suggest this.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1343703/
It's not exactly Russian, as it is a joint Belarusian-Russian project, but anyway, it's a pretty good film. It's much better than Nikita Mikhalkov's "masterpieces" about WW2, in any case.
The entire film can be found on YouTube with English subtitles - the copyright holders don't seem to care.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308476/ : That one is one more of non-shitty films about war

If you want a Soviet classic, then I suggest this one, filmed by Armenian director based on Ukrainian literature and casting mostly Ukrainian actors - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058642

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096126/ - this one is a 1988 film. Good satire on 1920s Soviet society

2014: Wait a second... where the fuck is French parmigiano, oysters, Norwegian salmon and dry Italian wine? That's insane! A fucking famine!!

Ukraine's gonna be alright. It's seen worse, and now you have the spirit to change and the help of the current world hegemon and his allies. And the new government is definitely better than Yanukovich and Yushenko, to boot.

Not sure if you realize how hollow that might sound to UR to say that Ukraines going to be allright, at least over the short term. They're still on a knifes edge with their economy and they're fighting a war to boot.

Over the long term, well, theres almost nowhere to go but up, right?

Yeah the trend all over the world is to go up.  As soon as a country isn't being actively held back you expect progress.
