 I'm just wondering what the best way to burn the fat off militia would be? Is there a commonly accepted method?

There's no real safe way to do it, I'm afraid. I'd say avoid magma mist entirely, or dragonfire. Mundane fire works, but you have to be VERY careful to limit their exposure to the stuff, as such a brush fire or any uncontrolled burn are out of the question as well. I personally recommend dropping them onto a burning, non artifact piece of wood, or anything else that will burn away quickly. And be sure to keep a source of water handy!

That said, the benefits of this are dubious at best. The new pulping mechanics and the fixes for burning flesh make it far too dangerous to be worth the risk with the benefits as diminished as they are now, in my opinion. I admit this isn't something I've done more than once or twice though, so I'll defer to someone with more experience.
