Lysander was the one to answer.

: To put it simply, General Ironside is the right hand man of King Ixion. The strongest general in their army.

: He's bringing in several squads, most of them footsoldiers, but also mounted knights, combat medics and a small force of mercenary mages.

: Lysander, don't fret about the enemies' strength. Other cities have sent us help, and even the General's appearance shouldn't turn the battle in their favor.

Lilly decided to ask another question.

"Did Coriven send people? I have an older brother there, in the military arm of the church."

: Coriven hasn't been able to send help due to their state of siege. But is your brother by any chance... Micheal Rose?

"Yes, that's him!"

"I've been worried about my family since I heard about this siege. Have you had any word from him?"

: His unit was sent under direct orders from the Archbishop to the southern border to defend against Ixion. So far we have only heard of his successes and victories. He has made a great effort to hold the line in that front.

"Oh."

"Well, that's good at least. I'll pray for his safety."

Bells started tolling around the city. Lord Luso stood up.

: The enemy is at our doors. It's time for me to take command of our forces. Stay here with Lysander. For now you will be treated as our guests.

But before Lord Luso could take even a step, a flash of light blinded everyone in the room. A very familiar flash of light for most of the party.

: No... Not again...

Except the man that appeared before then wasn't familiar at all, sporting a red robe and showing his face.

: Salutations, my dear enemies! I am Magnussen.

The man did a slight flourish.

: And I am here to bring doom to your commander, and your city!

Magnussen then pointed a pitch black staff at Lord Luso and launched a dark orb him before anyone could react. Magnussen turned around and was delighted to see Lamden.

: Oh... what a wonderful coincidence. Isn't this great? You survived long enough to see the fruits of my reseach, which you helped forward, however unvoluntarily that was.

Magnussen was staring at Lamden's arm as he said that last part.

: I'm sorry I can't stay here any longer, but I am a busy man after all. Have a nice last moments... hahahahahaha.

He pressed a button on a device and with a flash of light he vanished again.

: What the hell did he do?!

Lysander and Lady Anne-Laude rushed to Lord Luso's side.

: Father! Are you alright?!

: I-I don't know... I think I-

Lord Luso was interrupted by suddenly coughing out blood and a black sludge.

: Healer! We need a healer!

But Lamden knew a healer wouldn't help. Lord Luso had just been inflicted a refined version of the curse that plagued his arm and was rapidly deteriorating.

: Please! We need help!

: *cough* Anne... *cough* Laude... *cough* take... *cough*

: Hold on just a bit!

: Just take... *coughcoughcough*

: ... Yes?

Lord Luso struggled to reach inside his robe and pulled out an item that he put in her hands. It was a Heaven Seal. Lady Anne-Laude looked at it with surprise.

: ! But I'm not ready yet... Don't give up, Lord Luso!

But Lord Luso had already stopped breathing.

: ...

: Father... How could this happen...

: ... And what do we do now?

: We needed him to command the defense force. Now that he's gone...

Lysander turned to Lady Anne-Laude, who returned an empty stare.

: B-but I'm not ready yet...

: Someone needs to take the command, and you're his successor. He even gave you his Seal.

: ...

: "Wh-!"
Reeling from the flash of light, Lamden attempted to shield his eyes. Magnussen's harsh voice brought him out of his stupor, and without delay the cavalier attempted to snatch his Sleep staff from its sling.
: "Stop right there!"
Too late. The sorcerer had already escaped, and where he stood in Lamden's gaze was quickly replaced by Lord Luso.
: "No!" Casting his Sleep staff aside, Lamden drew one of his Heal staves and attempted healing anyway, despite bitterly knowing full well it would not work. After six or seven attempts, the Heal staff fell to the floor beside the Sleep staff, and Lamden to a knee, quietly cursing to himself and gripping his cursed arm.

Catherine blinked. Well, that confirmed the whole teleport magic thing.

An expression of pain governed Laura's face now but she said nothing. She thought they had this kinda crap behind them, for once!

After the initial shock passed, Harold started to think.

: Hang on just a second. Did you see the device he used? It was the same that the masked man used. Remember what he said? "Teleporting blindly is a good way to leave a rock embedded corpse".

: What...?

: That incident. Nikolai said some sort of beacon was needed for someone other than that masked guy to teleport that way. And that guy Magnussen was definitely not the masked man. It's possible he had someone from the inside plant a beacon beforehand.

Harold started looking around for strange things, but Lady Anne-Laude was already staring at Lysander, who was backing into a wall.

: Lysander... Tell me you didn't...

On Lysander's face no trace of the pain and emotion he showed earlier remained.

: Damn, I didn't expect you to know that much about these kind of things. It's complicated. More than you think.

Lysander opened up a secret door on the wall and closed it behind him. Harold rushed after him but the wall wouldn't budge.

: What are we going to do now?!

: We're going to get the hell out of here!

Kyle turns to Catherine.
"You're a mage aren't you? Why can't you blow open the wall with some of your fancy magics?"

"Do you think a fireball could knock out a wall? And if they could, that a country at war wouldn't have taken precautions against it?"
