It's a really stupid pronoun. They is a much more reasonable and obvious third-person singular pronoun. We already use it in that way after all, and extending it to people without a gender makes more sense.

To some extent, I agree, but they also implies multiple and it gets confusing to me at the very least.

But personally, I just don't give a shit what pronoun people use with me. So meh.

Let me rephrase that. Before Sam joined the army, they would have undergone a medical examination. Which meant that someone would have checked for their physical gender, since that stuff is pretty important and definitely something that the medical team should know. And since Smurf is running the army... he should know what's in Sam's pants. Just a thought.

Hmmm... Yeah, Sam's definitely transgender. Because they don't identify with the gentalia in between their legs. You don't have to consider yourself to be either gender to be transgender. You just have to think that your gender, whatever it is, is different from your biological sex.
